As most of you know, I'm one who does some ridiculous testing/quality control of the steels and knives I use. Always searching for the next extreme, hard use steel, I think I've found S7's match. The steel is CPM 1V. When I called Niagara Specialty Metals to inquire about purchasing a bar for testing, I was told "Hmm we don't sell 1V to many knifemakers. We don't stock it in bar stock, just sheet stock". I asked what they had to cut a bar off of and they had .275/300" thickness. I went ahead and had them shear off a 2" wide bar for me.
Fast forward to today. I needed to make a coupon which is a 2" by 2" square so I could start my heat treating testing. I picked a suitable HT protocol for this steel. Ran the HT cycle, cryo and tempering. Off to the Rockwell tester. I did 3 Rockwell tests and all 3 read 59rc exactly. Since this steel is highly comparable to S7, I did my 41 mag. shot on the 2X2 test piece. Below is the results. The steel took the impact at 10 yds. and it is really tough to see the hit. You need to hold it in the light just right to see it. The black arrow is pointing to where the bullet struck. If you look to the left almost in the center, you will see the diamond point impressions from the Rockwell tests.

Since this steel is limited in availability, I plan on making standard BBT out of it once I get everything with it in order. It's also extremely expensive.

The other thing I like about 1V is that it machines and grinds like A2. I've made thousands of blades from A2 so it is not going to slow me down.

I love that Scott shoots these tests with a 41 Magnum - a true aficionados big bore revolver.

I like it. Is it hard to sharpen on a stone? Or maybe you dont know that yet until you grind out a knife?

I think a deer creek or one of those tantos would be cool.

It should be easy to sharpen with diamond abrasives.
Not sure. Best to contact NSM for a quote. They can cut any size you need.

Here's some technical info you'll find interesting about 1V.
    Relative Mechanical Properties
    Impact Toughness and Wear Resistance
With it's 1% vanadium content, CPM 1V has wear resistance slightly better then A2. Because of it's CPM microstructure, 1V has high impact toughness approaching that of the shock-resistant tool steels such as S7.
    Machinability and Grindability
The machinability and grindability of CPM 1V in the annealed condition is similar to that of A2.

I look forward to testing this one out when you start producing blades! Would be perfect for a 6-7" Tusker!

The shooting tests were done in back of my house in the woods. I don't live in a gun free zone. I shoot freely at home.

Is it funny that you're more impressed that a/your knife maker shot the steel with a high caliber handgun thand the fact that he properly did the hardness test?

Finished the CPM 1V BBT. Hammer test. I hammered the blade hard into the 1/8" thick mild steel. It cut in a 1/2" deep.
