Is what I saw on my 6 mile hike yesterday. This is one of the best sections of the North Country Trail near my house. I see deer nearly every time I am out there. The trail starts off crossing a river on a 6x6 that is long enough that it bounces with your steps. You would think 6 inches is wide enough but it sure can seem small when crossing such a wide body of cold water. 
Next you come up to the swamp. The trail actually cuts through the swamp on a little ridge of land that is above water.
Clear sign of beaver in this pond. Though you rarely get a glimpse of them.
The trail then turns into hardwood and red pine forest.
Before getting to the VA the trail passes the National Cemetery and crosses one of the access roads. I often take a side trip to visit my fathers grave. He was in the Air Force and served in WWII and Korea.

If you have one of the big trail systems near you there are lots of little know and rarely traveled gems like this. Get out there and find them.
