This was my grandfather's many years ago. My dad said that his grandmother kept this under her bed for protection (a gun would have been better) until the 60's when she passed away.

I'm thinking that I'm going to sharpen the blade and put a longer handle on it so that it's usable with two hands. I'm purchasing a Wetterlings 20" very soon, so I think I'll let my friend use it. Just looking for a project to do i guess...

I'm going to carefully take the handle off so I can reattach it again later if I want.

Let the project begin! :D

If Im not Mistaken its a WW2 issue hatchet, probably used by your grandfather. Ya I would leave it alone if I were you.

For my take on it:
I have a WWII issue machete and Navy Camilus knife that my Dad used in Central and S. America in the war. I use them both when afield, and love that they remind me of him. It's a way of keeping him with me (he passed in 1994) when I'm out. They are hardy tools, and I will pass them on to my son when he is older with the go ahead to use them, too.

I like to just use em. not saying i'd replace the handle though, because it's hard to find the ones with that original OD green color. it is a family pass down item though, and it's cool that you have it.

for me, i'd only replace the handle if necessary, and i'd just sharpen it and use the heck out of it. all the cosmetic flaws, those are just history and character.

I never loan my wife, guns knives or AXES to anyone, they never come back the same!
That is a family hierloom, if you gotta do something for your friend send him to the hardware store!

Very cool axe. I'd use it if I were you. It's too cool and too good a piece of steel to not use. I recently refurbished an WWII axe made by collins and it is very good. But at the same time if you're getting a Wetterlings LHA soon you probably won't use the older hatchet much and it will look more vintage hanging it's current condition if that's your plans for it.

Although I've utilized a lot of WWII and Korean War era surplus, that's the first time I've ever seen one of those. I think I'd go ahead and use it, but not alter it if the wood is sound and tight.
