I did just a little testing/comparison of the Ontario ASEK and Bear Grylls fixed blade. I chose to compare these two because of their similarities.

First a pic of both. Both have around 5" blades, rubberized handles and are "survival" knives.

First a single chop into a small green tree. Looks like the Gerber bit just a bit deeper, both did surprisingly well at this, considering they are lightweights.

Chopping a sapling. The ASEK did alot better at this, probably because of the thin/high flat grind.

Making fuzz sticks and lighting them up with a firesteel. Ontario was a little easier to make fuzzsticks with, the serrations interfered minimally.

Notchmaking. The ASEK excelled at this, teeth on the spine really helped with this task. Bear Gryll's knife also made notches just fine.

And here are the two knives after all is said and done.

Impressions of the two knives. If I knew nothing about these two knives(where they're made, brand, etc) and had to choose just one, it would be a close decision, but the Ontario would win simply due to the handle. It feels like it melts into my hand, gives alot of control over the knife.

I meant to get a few more tests done today but it started getting dark and cold. If there's any interest I'll test these knives more. If you got any questions or wanna see specific tasks done with em, just say so. :4:

my go to knife is an asek. Army issued to me as excess before my first deployment to Iraq. (which means its mine forever)

I haven't found the task yet it can't accomplish and I think the serrated edge thing is entirely blown out of proportion.

The advantage of the asek's serration over others is that they are uniform in size and come with the proper ceramic stone to sharpen them on the strap cutter that comes with the blade. No fuss, No muss.

I have a Bear and Sons Asek model they made, think is now discontinued I like alot, it's stainless but was bought as a river knife so that's a good thing....good review.

The ASEK design works on many levels, I've owned and gifted many over the years.
