Rodger's British Army Marlin Spike Folder

Camillus Titanium/Bamboo Marlin Spike Folder

Hey Folks,

Due to all the rope/knot work that I'm involved in, I really have my eye set on these 2 folders with marlin spikes. The British Rodgers is very old school and military-robust. The Camillus with bamboo scales is sleek, modern and more lightweight.

I'd be curious to see if any of you have any feedback or opinions on these 2 folding knives.

This web-page *here* ... has a pretty comprehensive listing of the world's most popular brands of nautical knives. The 2 I selected above are the ones I like the most.

Thanks for your time & help!

I have never seen the Camillus version, but the British is a pretty nice solid piece.

My favorite folder with spike is the Myerchin. A heavy but nicely done tool. Various scales and a bit more coin than the Brit of Camillus.

That Rodgers is the cats meow! It seems to be "out of stock" though and getting it across the pond may be an issue.
Keep an eye out on fleabay, I have seen some nice ones come across there.
You can even get a Case for about that price.
I personally prefer the fixed blades with seperate blade and spike and a sheepsfoot blade is the way to go, IMHO!
I would be interested in seeing pics of some of your work!?!

I've always thought of a marlinspike knife as a great outdoors knife. I've got older Camillus, Buck, Rough Rider, Italian and British Military patterns.

I prefer the pattern like the Camillus you linked to. It's slimmer and sleeker so it doesn't feel like a brick in your pocket like the Military pattern does.

Here's a Rough Rider I modified with Maple scales. The hump on the blade tip has also been rounded out and the spine squared off as a firesteel scraper.

I don't, or very little. ;) I have looked the Joseph Rodgers knife over and it appeared to be very well made. They were asking too much for it at the time or I might have picked it up (I saw it at a feed store, of all places).

I love a good rigging, boating, sailor's knife and find their use to be invaluable in the outdoors. I also have a Myerchin, a Schrade, and an old Klein (?). The marlin spike that I use the most often came with the Grohmann #3 Boat Knife (rides in the same sheath).

Thanks, guys. Great feedback and insight.

Spork, that Rough Rider looks great. Much better than the stock scales.

I might add, the Myerchin is highly rated and an awesome knife. But since I don't plan on using this knife on the perilous high seas (where knives drop - then dissappear forever), I don't Myerchin's ridiculously huge lanyard ring. Which look somewhat ergonomically awkward/uncomfortable.

I might add too ... the French Laguoile folders also occasionally have marlin spikes (or the functional equivalents as such). And they are farmland knives - not nautical knives.

Besides all things ropey and nautical, marlin spikes have a ton of land lubber uses. As already mentioned they can be used as awls and hoof picks. I've used them as timber scribes, stakes to hold string lines and peg down tape measure ends, Bull pins for aligning holes, grout and mortar removers. The list can o on and on. Sometimes it is just damn handy to have a metal spike at your disposal.
