I tought I would show you an auger typical for Norway (or is it?).
It is called a Navar.

They was usually made on request by the local smith, but were also made en masse by larger smithys.
This is typically a boat builders tool, but larger navars was also used when building timber houses.
They come in several sizes; typically from a few milimeters in diameter to about 25-30mm.
The navar on the above pics is about 13mm in diameter.
I don`t use it very often. But I think it is a nice tool for a "bushcrafter".

Above; the navar in use for collecting birch sap.

Nice, seen them in Norther Germany too - my friend has one he got from his grandfather who was a carpenter.

Tor, I'm interested in that plug you use for the birch sap. Do you have any close up pictures of it?

Those are really neat. I guess Ray Mears became intrigued with them, on his site was the first time I had seen one.

I like simple tools like your navar. I have a few Jpn. "gimlets" the name in japanese escapes me at the moment. They are not made the same at all, but that is what I'd call your tool too in english: a gimlet.

Nope.
But it is just a cone made of pine with a hole (same diam. as the colletor hose) drilled trough it.
It just sits in the opening of the hole, not very far inside the tree.

By the way, the tree was to small to yield any real amount of sap. It was just to show my daughter what we used to do when we where kids.

Nice Tor Helge. I Like to make one up. I have a few auger bits kicking around. Thanks for Sharing.

For those of you who dabble as a smith or are a real one, and want to make a auger like this I post a pic showing the "four stages" of navar making.
The auger could be made from round bar or a square one.
The picture explain more then words I think.
