Ive been trying to learn more wild edibles and such in my area as well as expand my woodsmens skills so today I went out for just a little bit on the property and practised my flint and steel in a somewhat damp environment (figured it would be a bit more chalenging) and plucked two things of sumac to try out a buddy told me you could make a tea with it so I had to give er a go

Thanks for looking

Loving the USArmy Shelter Half. Mine goes with me on all winter outings. NIce to see others using it, too.

way cool to learn your local stuff, Kerri - congrats!

awesome pics too, very drool worthy.

(I always heard of "POISON SUMAC"! )

Great stuff man...but enough with the outing posts already! That's like what...3 days in a row now???!!!! You're KILLING those of us who are confined to an office. :D

Just kidding brother. I'm living vicariously through you right now, and love seeing all the photos. I'm digging the half shelter too. Source?

Also, that first picture....looks like pooch is interested in the sumac also. (I spy the little paw in the corner)

Thanks again!

red sumac - good, white sumac - bad! I love sumac drink with a little sugar. It does taste very much like pink lemonade and has lots of Vitamin C I'm told. Good outing and thanks for sharing.

Scott

BTW, your hand in that first picture looks a little funny. Are you sure that was sumac you were drinking?:26:

He's interested in everything haha. the two shelter halves I have are the same ones my dad gave me when I was a kid theyre almost 20 years old and going strong, but I dont know where he got em. I have seen them from time to time in surplus stores though. Sorry I have times were Im never home and other times like now when I have the opportunity to do things like this plus Im getting it all out now before my daughter is born

good job Kerri.

Your billy can looks about as used as mine, I really like those zebra billies

Thanks for sharing your outings!!! I wish I could get out that much this time of the year. The weather is perfect! A little jealous over here...

Y'all know to strain the lil hairs of the Staghorn Sumac seeds after brewing n before drinking, right? Same as Rose Hip tea.

+1 on the shelter half. Maybe we need a social group for shelter half users!

We've got sumac all over up here, I'll try it out when I get up and out again. Love the shelter half, my Dad gave me a dutch knock off when I was a kid, uses buttons instead of snaps. Didn't get much use until I was a teenager and didn't always want visitors in my campsites. Olive Drab fits in a lot better than my sky-blue A frame I paid for, haha. Much heavier though, but if you can cut poles and pegs on site you'll save a lot of weight, and if you only carry half and use it for a lean-to it's just right. A sil-nylon tarp might be a lot lighter, but you don't have to worry about sparks or the wind ripping out grommets.

Awesome Kerri. Glad to see you gettin out so much lately. Ive made that stuff a few times, and really like it. Ive made it as a hot beverage, and iced it with sugar. Tasty.

I love sumac Aid tea what ever you want to call it made 2 gallons last year missed out this season. Can still harvest just not as good.

On my last overnighter, I used just a tarp and the wind blew under it a lot. I missed adjusting the wings to block wind. I usually don't carry the poles, but often do carry stakes. Clipping a space blanket to the half with binder clips is a good way to reflect heat.
