When I was 10 years old (1984'ish) I really wanted a special pair of boots, and my mother was cool enough to get them for me. I'd love to get a pair of them again, but I do not know the name, or where to find them. And I have looked over the years. Anyways, they were a darker brown leather, ruff side out. They had large red laces and were only about a inch or two past the ankle. Someone once told me they were called Herman survivors or something like that. Anyone know what I'm talking about and where to get them? I want to cool feeling they gave me when I was 10. :57:

I might be a few years older than you, but I remember in the 80's everyone was wearing Colorado hikers. I thought they were pretty cool too.

BINGO!!!, that was fast. I do not remember they saying Colorado or mine having the padded ankles, but that's 90% of the boot that I had. Go they still make them? I gotta find some!!!

I had a pair of Dexter full grain ruff out hiking boots back in the 80's that I loved and were no longer being made. I actually found a pair on eBay new and in perfect condition. So I would check there first.

I just did a quick search online. I saw some used ones on Ebay. Don't know if they still make them or not.

As soon as you said red laces it came back to me!

Yeh, I'm having zero luck finding the 80's style boot. Some old used one's, but not my size and some are asking BIG money. Too bad, to me it's a classic looking outdoor boot.

I had a pair of kick backside Matterhorn that fit that description. Full grain leather, vibram sole that screwed into a leather sole. They were able to have replaceable soles. They rocked and then went the way of the Dodo when they stopped making them in Canada and moved overseas to the land of polyurethane foam soles.

I remember those from the 80's. I saw them just recently in the movie "The Eiger Sanction". Clint wears those scaling the western US cliffs. How the times have changed. I always loved that style of boot too.

Herman Survivors are now made in the PRC and are very crappy. They sell them at Wallyworld.

Wish they were half as sturdy as they used to be!:(

Wait just a minute here!

You mean they used to make shoes without toes hanging off them?

(pretty tired of the vibram 5 finger movement and can't wait for that fad to go back from where ever it came)

OMG!!! If you go to dextershoe.com and click on North America it takes you to Payless Shoesource. What have things come to?

I had a pair when I was a kid as well and this thread got me all excited to get another pair...Looks like a lost cause at this point.

When I was in Scouts I put an axe into the toe of a pair while wearing them. The heavy sole and the double leather where the tongue begins stopped the axe from doing a lot more damage than it did. They were a neat boot but WAY too heavy for hiking. They say a pound on your feet is like 5 pounds in your pack, or something like that. If I remember correctly those were close to 3 or 4 pounds a pair.

Haha! I remember a pair I had that I replaced a pair of soles on, and then... *sniff sniff* I got rid of 'em 'cause they outlasted my interest!! Agggh! One of those, "If only I could go back" moments! Doh!:56:

I was in Target tonight and Wenger sp? makes a pair. I have never tried their boots, but a buddy wears a pair, different style, everyday to work.

Wow I haven't seen those in eons, buddy wore them on the AT with me back in the day....too heavy for me, even back then.

gotta getcha some a day-glo neon shell, rip the knees out of your jeans, and maybe some big hair....THEN you'll be rockin' the 80's! :D

I remember those boots- yep, I had 'em as well! :9:

Didn't you wear them with your parachute pants? ;)

Maybe a tad to heavy for hiking. But I love my Chippewa Loggers. Handcrafted in the USA for around 150 bucks is hard to beat in my book.

we called them "waffle stompers" - no clue what the brand was, but wore those puppies out in the late 70's early 80's.

Look up the Mt. Mckinneys. Believe thats the way you spell it. I bought a pair from cumberland transit back in the 90's and I believe they still make them. It is Hi-tec is the manufacturer I believe. Now they are heavy, and if your interested in them I still have them in great shape. Let me know what your shoe size is and we can from there if your interested. PM me.
