Hey crew,
My main hunting bag busted a few seams and I'm looking to replace it with a type of packframe using an alice frame that I explained a year or so ago on this thread:

http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26508

The question I had of how well an alice pack carried with the alice shoulder straps and no pack still hasn't been answered. So I'll ask it again :6: Has anyone here spent any time packing a considerable 40-50lb load on an alice frame with no pack attached? And does the top of the frame dig into your back? Also, has anyone tried using the frame/no pack with the newer molle shoulder straps? I see they have a built in back pad on the straps and was wondering if that was sufficient to pad your back from the frame?

Thank you!

I came as close to answering you on the other one as I did here.
but in both cases...I'm no help! :54:

Alice with no frame? yep, I can talk about that - that's how we run ours 'round here.
but a frame with no Alice? :6: I can't help ya.

but hopefully you will get some replies here! ( free bump!)

Never done it, but can't think of why it wouldn't work. When wearing the ALICE with frame the padded frame sleeve on the pack is in contact with your upper back so you may have to pad that area with some foam. I think a section of dense foam (a cut-up USGI sleeping pad, for example) secured to the frame with duct tape should do the trick.

I've carried a med alice with straps & no frame for years as a hunting ruck.
I can honestly say tho, I would not want to carry a
50lb. load that way.
As far as the alice frame goes, I find it nothing short of
torture.
I love the alice bag but hate the alice hardware.
I can say tho that upgrading to the LC2 straps made a big difference in a good way.
Hope this helps somehow & good luck.

What about something like this?

Working for the US Forest Service I frequently carry Mark 3 pumps which weigh between 50-60 lbs on the alice frame with alice straps and the alice kidney belt. Sometimes carry it over/with my line pack which weighs in around 25 lbs or so depending on the time of day. Carried it up and down mountains on rough and uneven terrain and can't really complain. Yeah it digs in after a while especially if your load is not secured well and is shifting around.
The alice frame cargo shelf helps considerably but are rarely issued with the rest of the alice gear in the forest service but can be found on ebay.
Personally I love the alice gear a use it often with all kinds of loads, heavy and light, for work and recreation.

I run an ALICE frame for dear season. I like it quite a bit. I padded the top cross bar with black foam pipe insulation then covered it in camo duct tape. For the money I have yet to find anything comparable. With the frame I have something to haul my blind, gear and the kill back to camp. It isn't the most comfortable, I will admit. It has been very serviceable for me though.

CI cant speak for these days. But when I was in the Corps we used an Alice frame with a shelf to carry the base camp radio in the field. This was over all kinds of terrain and in all imaginable conditions. It was also before the current hip belt design which looks a whole lot more comfortable than the equipment we were using then.

The Alice frame makes a good freight frame, especially with the shelf.

bullpacs.com makes a far better one.

The old swiss military one I've used for a couple years was even better, but heavier. And nigh impossible to find.
