I really don't like altoids, but I picked up the smalls one day when getting a 6 pack. But was like this thing isn't big enough to be practical for anything. I was mucking about getting ready to heat coals for a carving project outside, made some shavings out of fatwood and was like hmmmmm wonder if that lil tin will hold enough to get a good burn going. Didn't really time it but it was good lengthy burn. Slip little ranger band over the tin to keep it closed. I been working on making small fire kits for some friends, think it'll make good addition, aside from having to eat the mints. :2:

Ha ha, which is worse? You don't like the mints but use the tins, I like the mints but don't use the tins.:27:

I use them tins for a tinderbox. I take charred punkwood & store it just like you mention with the band for transport, & I use it mostly when my fingers are cold. I strike the flint down the striker throwing sparks into the box. After I get the flame I just close the box & then it is a heater to rewarm my fingers for a lil bit too.
:)
When my fingers are cold from some of the temps I go out in, I find it easier to do it that way than to try to hold something on the flint & strike the flint with the striker. :)

If ya drop them mints in your tea(pine needle for example) it adds a bit of flavor/sweetness if you like it that way.
;)

I'm with you. Don't like Altoids. Go to Survival Resources. I just got four "Altoid" tin for a couple bucks each. No finish to strip off and slightly larger.

I use an Altoids Smalls tin to carry char cloth for my fire piston. It holds enough to light about a week's worth of cigarettes for me so it would do for about a month's worth of fires if I use found materials for coal extenders.

I am not a fan of the regular flavor altiods but I like the wintergreen and cinnoman flavors.

Those tins can be used to make charcloth and can carry plenty of firestraw and jute twine.

If yu are a airgun shooter use the metal pellet containers, throw the pellets in a plastic box and fill the metal one up with tinder.

I use air gun ammo tins a lot actually.

Might try the tea thing, not thought of that.

I use a few of them, one with tinder, one with fishing weights the other is hooks. I am altoid frequent user though...so i have endless source of these things

Don't like the mints either, but the tins are good for making char cloth.

I also have made a small survival fishing kit out of a small one.

I like the original mints not those sugar free ones. I got some small tins from a place that sells all kinds of tins and bottles.

I use one as a tinder box. It holds some fatwood, jute, matches, and char cloth. I find the small tin holds enough when you add gathered materials.

I also keep another for an ultra small pocket psk. I'm not a huge fan of the pocket style psk, but it can't hurt to have one around.

If you don't plan on throwing your tin in coals or a fire (to make char cloth), maximize the outer surface area too. Here are some suggestions:

- Keep a peel-off swatch or more of Gorilla/Duct Tape on one or both sides.

- On the bottom, superglue a perfectly fit patch of leather for stropping your blades.

- Secure the tin with a homemade piece of Ranger Band (fit to your size specs). Ranger Bands make great tinder, too.

- Finally, if you wanna waterproof your tin, run a continuous strip of the recently-popular silicon tape around the perimeter seam. Once you easily remove it with a knife, you'll need to put fresh silicon tape on it again.

I love my tins. I have found that they fit quiet nice into a couple pouches I have. I dont go into the woods without my fire kit altiods tin. I clip it onto my belt and away I go.

I use a smalltoids to carry 3 Esee arrow heads :-)
I like the idea of a fishing kit, I'd have alot of use for it
here in southern nevada :-)
