Looking for a place to buy a belt grinder in Anchorage for knife making. Not turning up anything on google or craigslist... Does anyone know of a place in Anchorage that sells this type of equipment? If not, does anyone know of a good place online to order from?

I'm not looking for the biggest/baddest most proffesional knife making equipment, I'd like to keep it around $500 or less. No northern tools deal, something made for the job. Doesn't have to be new, but in good shape, and shipping to Alaska.

Any help in this is super appreciated. Advice is more than welcome, keeping in mind that i don't want to improvise with equipment not made for the job (I'd rather finish by hand than rig something, i've had my fill of that...)

the craftsman 2x42 belt grinder isn't bad for starting out and it costs less than $200.
I've also heard that the Grizzly tool 2x72 knife grinder isn't bad - but some folks say the pulleys need to be replaced. with shipping it's about $575.

Even buying all the parts and building one yourself would come in over budget. The best option I have seen for the 500 mark is the coot grinder.

You would need to source pullies and a motor local. With the cost you would be over your budget but the 2x72 belts seem to be a worthy reason to spend more.

Try a 4x36 bench mounted belt sander. In the lower 48 these things are available at any Home Depot or Lowes for under 200.00 in several brands. With good epoxy bonded belts you can do a LOT of knife work. I use one for modifying pocket knives and straight knives too to make them better whittlers. I think they are far better than the 1 or 2 inch wide sanders.
Use a 60 or 80 grit for initial work and then 400 to finish up before stropping.
I used contact cement to glue leather to an old belt to make a really great power strop for use on this machine

If you are starting, the 2 X 42 Craftsman is the way to go ($120 +/-)

Depending on how good you are at scavenging, you might be able to cobble a 2 X 72 grinder.

For the money, it's hard to beat the Grizzly. I have had one for several years with no complaints other than the motor gets in the way when hallow grinding right to left on blades over six inches.
I recently upgraded to a KMG but will keep the Grizzly for sure.

I use a 1x30 harbor freight belt sander that cost $40. they do flat rate shipping for $7.

They also have a better 1x30 belt/ 5" disc sander for $70.

Either of these will work till you find something local.
