I just made my first two leather axe sheaths, largely inspired by Skog Kniv and rezilo (gozdovnik on YouTube). I was going for simple but effective and not bad looking. I have a long way to go before I try some of the beautiful stuff I've seen on this forum.

One is for an old Snow & Nealley Hudson Bay head I got on eBay. I put on a new handle from the Hickory Handle Store (eBay). I used 8-9 oz. veg-tan tooling belly leather (Tandy), copper rivets and burrs (darkvictoryarmory on eBay), a line 24 snap, and neatsfoot oil compound.

The second is for my Cold Steel trail Hawk. Same materials, but this one has no strap.

Both have welts glued in place with Barge cement before riveting.

I had to pay attention to make sure I applied snaps and rivets that have backs on the inside before I did the final folding and riveting. I also learned to be patient with the sanding of edges.

Up the creek and justin baker: Yes, the rivets seem easy and appropriate for axe sheaths, but maybe a bit too big for knives. These copper rivets and burrs are great; easy to install and strong. I didn't buy the setting tool, I just drilled a hole in a scrap of red oak, cut off the excess with nippers and peened them over with a hammer on the back of the vise.

I wish I could find copper-plated snaps to match.
