Hey gents, shopping for a well thought out, convenient use map pocket for on-the-go navigation. Do you like the fold-out style, the tear-away style, the notebook binder style? Which is most convenient, and why? Room for a wax pencil or two and compass would be great. Thanks

Yeah I plan on throwing something like that in the kit, but I need something to hold it all. I've seen maybe 10 different companies making them-admin style MOLLE-compatible map pouches. I plan on strapping one to my lumbar pad so I can navigate on-the-go instead of digging around in my pack trying to find it all... some are drop-down style with a quarter-fold pocket for a map, some are velcro-tear away and others are zip-up binder style. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of the above and if they liked or disliked them.

hi gang...when i was an Infantry Soldier i/we would carry our map in a heavy ziplock bag folded to the AO along with a protactor and afew alcohol pens/pencils...this was carried in my BDU cargo pocket...the G.I. ziplock bags were a little heavyer plastic than the norm...vince g. 11B Inf:42:...

There's a lot of gimmicky stuff out there for holding maps. Has been since, oh, World War One. Simple is better. Also keep in mind that whatever clear plastic cover your device has, it will get scratched up in pretty short order. That is why I shy away from the more expensive solutions.

Here's what I use, and I like them a lot: Seattle Sports Dry Doc Map Case

Yup! Simpler is better!
