Me, Justin Baker, Kyle (crimescene450) and Kyle's friend went out this weekend for a little camping trip just north of San Francisco on Mount Tamalpais. We set out early to get a good camping spot, upon arival we were notified that they were doing construction on some water lines and the campground was closed, they told us to head up the street and that there was a reserve only place there. We headed onward, making our way from redwood forests to the coast. I slept in my first tarp shelter, and loved it. We did some flint and steel fires, muffin baking, cordage making, and a ton of other stuff. It was a really great trip, many memories made.

The camphost was great and let us pick out a camp site, there weren't many in the place, I think maybe 10, unless there were more further down the coast somewhere. This is the site we chose, number 3, Camp Starfish.

My first ever tarp shelter, this turned out to give me one of the best nights sleeps I've ever had outside. I added a bit more wind protection as the day went on. Here it is, a tarp with a reusable space blanket on the bottom and up a bit to provide heat reflection, worked great.

This is it a little later in the day, I borrowed Justins tarp to add a wind break.

We hung out a bit at the rocks, on the walk back Kyle showed us a bunch of plants and their uses. Back at camp it was about time to get the fire going. My fire prep kit

The sun started setting, pretty much our entire field of view was ocean, you could see the curves of the earth.

Spork has a thread going about kettle baking, it inspired me to try my hand at it. I picked up some Guyat squishy bowls, which turned out to be absolutely fantastic for baking. I cut the bottom off of Connors soup can and put some holes in the top to allow steam to get up.

I put it in the bottom of the pan and added a little water, just under the top of the pot stand thing.
IMAG0611.jpg

Mixed up some just add water blueberry muffins and put it in the squishy bowl. Put the bowl on top of the stand.

Finished product, it took about 30 minutes, came out fantastic though, surprised me how well it tasted actually.

The next morning, cloudy and cold, it got down to about freezing last night.

After we packed up we decided to go for a day hike, because our camp site was only about 500ft in and we werent tired enough. Some shots of Muir woods, we did a nice 3 mile loop, huge redwoods everywhere.

Good photos. I have spent a lot of time on Mt. Tam. while stationed in SF back in the late 60s. It's changed a lot. Road wasn't paved back then.

Gett'in old...

Where's the smiles at guys? Anywho, looks like a fun trip, only been to the ocean once and that was when I was 13. love to go back. Thanks for sharing!

You guys are getting a groove going!
Great stuff!

Yeah it was me and justin's third weekend in a row. and twice in 3 weeks for dan.

Im gonna be heading out to ohio wednesday for a month now though. That itll be another month before we can get together again.

Speaking of, my west German wool pants came in today and fit like a glove. Another piece of winter gear checked off the list.

im starting to eagerly look for more "outings" posts by CHERT and wish I lived close by to tag along

I live about four blocks from the beach here in New Jersey, but I don't know of any camping spots close enough to see the ocean. Here it's all developed or migratory bird reserves that don't allow foot traffic most of the year. Any nearby East Coasters know of any coastal camping? I'd love to post a response to those fine pictures above, and I wish I had the time and money to make a trip out there to that coast. Some day...

Lookin'good, guys!

That's the way to have fun.

I'm not aware of any ocean-view camp sites like that in NJ. You can camp in many places close to the beach within the Pinelands National Reserve, but it doesn't quite touch the shoreline.

Surprised you guys were able to just show up and score such a great ocean view campsite at a popular park like that. But more power to ya! Shows the benefits of camping off-season and not minding some cold.

Chert: Great to see your tarp/space blanket sleep setup worked out so well. Do I see a sleeping bag in there, or were you strictly using wool blankets? And what did you use for a pad?
