California meetup. Post in this one, not the old one.

Which end of the state would you want a meetup to be in?

So in order to figure out where we might want to have a meetup, I'm making a new thread with a poll. Sorry to make 2 threads here, I couldn't manage to get a poll added to the old one.

Here's the old thread for reference.

Myself, Justin baker, and chert all go out on camping trips together and we all live in the general bay area. So we can go either way. (North or South)

So whichever end of the state more people are in, and available, will be the general direction of where the meetup will be.

I am just South of Sacramento so I can be at the coast or
in the sierras with a couple hours driving.

I am up in Grass Valley, so the more north the better I guess.

I'm near Sac - but I just booked a hunting trip in Feb. So little chance of me getting out for this one. Good on you all for getting another one together.

I'm in Wheatland so I would like something more north. But it really doesnt matter to me as long as I can get some heads up before hand. Thanks.

I'm WAAAY up in Redding so north is better for me, but I know I'll have to head south to where most of you are. So I'll travel within reason :)

What is your definition of winter. This is the craziest warm January
I have ever seen.

Lol, you are totally right. But in a month or less the sierra's could all the sudden have 7 foot of snow and be 10 degrees at night. Or maybe not. Who knows?

So it appears that the North wins.

Were gonna want to be in a Nationa forest so we can do free dispersed camping.

Just throwing out some places here:

El dorado NF
Tahoe NF
Plumas NF
Mendocino NF.....?

Any bites? Other suggestions? I have no problem with camping in the snow, or closer to shore where itll just be in the 50's etc.

Thisll probably happen in late feb, early march if had to guess. Are there any holidays in late feb or march? I dont remember. IF there is a holiday then we could make this a 2 nighter. (assuming people have work or school friday. camp saturday, sunday night, leave on a holiday monday)

Thoughts?

The observed holidays at my job are

Presidents Day - Monday, February 20

Memorial Day - Monday, May 28

I am in the San Bernardino area... but I am really wanting to do a meet I can go anywhere in southern California with a greyhound stop or train... I go back to school in mid febuary but I could skip a day or two.

I'm tossing in a vote for Plumas. I've had my eyes on that one for a while now.

Mendocino is a 2nd place vote.

I've been to Tahoe, but it's an awesome place for sure.

Eldorado is the furthest from me, so it gets last place :)

Monday FEb 20th is Presidents day.

Does that work for other people?

Itd be feb 18th and feb 19th. 2 nights perhaps?

That weekend works for me. I don't get presidents day off
but I can take a vacation day.

I am going to do some searching for areas to camp.

I did a quick search of "Mendocino national forest map"
I don't know much about this area but looks like it would be a straight shot North from the valley.

Tahoe N.F. is my go-to camping area. My brother has a
cabin above Nevada City. But it is a long bumpy road into that area.
Five Lakes Basin is a great place.

Hey small world. Thats where I call home as well.

So how about Mendocino?

It would be a new adventure for most of us and...

It would mean 120 mile drive vs. over 200 miles to Tahoe ;)

I have been around Mendocino A LOT (not for a long time though). It's huge, lots of roads going through and a labyrinth of old logging roads.
It's going to be hard to pin point an area though.... if you guys could help it would be nice.

I have no problem with Medocino. The weather wont be snow I dont think. And its closer to where im at.

I may stop by at REI in a few days and see if they have one of those Nat Geo topo maps.

A guy I work with has camped all over Mendocino NF.
He said there a lot of great spots and few other people out
there. He said most of the roads are rough, that is what keeps
most people out.
Sounds good to me.

Claimjumper, does your guy have any suggestions on good spots?

I would think something not too far off the beaten path. I think rain is supposed to come through next week, and who knows what might happen by the end of Feb. I've gotten myself stuck more than once on logging roads. At least up here, what looks just damp can have a darn mudpit right under the surface that'll sink your 4x4 up to the axles. Ask how I know :P

Agile,He talked a mile a minute lol
He is sorta a loaner and likes the area because he hardly ever
sees anyone when he is out there.

I will print out a map of the area and show it to him Monday.
He talked about several lakes that were good fishing.
I am hoping we can find a spot on the east side,
less driving more skill practicing.

I have been to Lake Pillsbury many times. Really cool place, VERY crowded and popular in the summer what it's like a ghost town in the winter. There is a big air field with a big target range there. The only problem is you can't legally camp in the lake pillsbury basin (around the lake/valley) outside of established campgrounds, which would be empty and free this time of year.
That area is pretty accessible though, might be a good place to look for further routes into the forest.

Lake Pillsbury, the only sizable lake on the Mendocino National Forest, is a popular attraction on Upper Lake Ranger District. Howard and Hammerhorn Lakes on Covelo Ranger District, and Letts and Plaskett Lakes on Grindstone Ranger District range in size from 3 to 13 acres, and are locally popular for camping and fishing. Yolla Bolly - Middle Eel Wilderness is shared by the Covelo and Grindstone Ranger Districts, and Snow Mountain Wilderness is shared by Grindstone and Upper Lake. Travel times to the major trail heads range from three to six hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, including one to two hours on dirt roads. Both Grindstone and Upper Lake Ranger Districts manage a system of off-highway vehicle trails that are recognized by users and environmentalists as a model for quality, environmentally sound Off-Highway Vehicle recreation.
