Anyone here know anything about if its legal to have a camp fire if camping in a state forest in mn, say if i dug a hole for the fire or something of the like?
I checked the dnr website for regulations on fires and it says only in fire rings and grills, so does that mean i can make my own fire ring anywhere i decide to camp, or is only where they are designated?
Any help would be appreciated, here is a link to the dnr with the regs.

That would be for designated camp sites in a state forest. Those should have their own fire rings. They mention the "dispersed" camping, which means basically you can camp where ever you'd like in the state forest. Specifically in that case, you need to practice leave no trace, but that should apply to designated camp sites as well. So as what my understanding is, you can have a fire, just be sure to take care of the remnants responsibly.

This is actually a problem for the Federal foresters in our neck of the woods. Transients hunker down for the winter in a tipi, or the like. Current rules are: "Move every two weeks," but some don't. Summers, some of same transients head for the BWCA. Supposed to get a new permit every time they re-enter, but they often don't. Local COs do their best to catch them out at the grocery store, but not often successful.

One such has really trashed a site on Knife Lake, BWCA. Same "Move every two weeks" rule applies. Not sure why it isn't enforced a bit more.
