Ok, I realize that I might be opening a can of worms here, but fortune favors the bold.

Cold steel hawks seem pretty awesome, but the medium carbon steel is a little intimidating. Can they take and hold an edge?

stone sharpened mine out of the box and it seems good so far - i still want to hit it with a bastard file and then stone it but I think its fine for what it is

holds an edge just fine for a tool desighned to take high impacts!
1055 steel does'nt have as much carbon as some of the 1000 series steels such as 1095,but thats ok because it has more ductile strength and is more easily sharpened in the field...woods

They do, but within reason.

They are built to deform rather than chip, so that's a plus when you're talking about hawks...they are, after all, popular for throwing:)

They hold a decent edge. I put mine through it's paces every time I venture into the woods, and give it jobs that most would consider only axe work, and it keeps it's edge without chipping or deforming. Just a light touch up with an arkansas stone afterwords keeps me in business.
I only slightly convexed mine just at the edge and left the steep shoulder bevels; this allows it to remain plenty sharp after lots of abuse, and I've never had the edge roll.

As others have said, the CS hawks can hold a very nice edge within reason. I stripped and convexed the edge on mine, its thinner all around and bites deeper into the wood.

Its not hair shaving sharp, more like utility sharp, sharp enough to do the job but not dull as to cause a dangerous mix. I dont like my hawk shaving sharp, I have rolled the edge twice in a row after getting it to shave hair, ever since I started getting it to a working edge, it has not rolled or chipped but done just fine when chopping.

You can get these plenty sharp. I don't expect your are going to be shaving with them, but planty sharp for field work.
As a few other folks have mentioned, if you get utility hawks/axes/etc too sharp, they have a tendancy to roll.

I also like to remove that black paint to make it look a little better.

Got mine on amazon.. last one for 21+change.

Amazon - Cold Steel Trail Hawk.

I was disappointed when i got mine. No edge at all. So, i took it to a grinder, and then some files, and then a stone, and it gots a good edge. Not shaving sharp, but holds a nice edge.

I took mine to the belt sander and reshaped the edge a bit.. Nice and sharp now, but we will see how it holds up over time...

None of my CS hawk heads have taken or held a decent edge. They have all seemed to have an allergy to hickory too.

Mine a year or so ago took to green Birch like Pit Bull supprised the H*ll out of me straight out of the box,was matched up with a Condor Golok and a Ka-Bar Pot Belly[all out of the box], then on another trip after doing a convect on it and removing the Black coating used it on some Dry hard wood splitting.Just keep in mind it's a Pecker not a smasher but with it's Light weight it's Fast and Speed has Some weight.

I took mine to the knife grinder and hollowed out the cheeks a little and honed up the edge. She will shave with ease now.

Anyone getting a shaving edge?

I put my cs frontier through the worksharp and got a hair popping edge. With all of the bald spots on my arms my wife thinks I'm mangy! Gonna have to switch to leg hairs since it's cold outside. :27:

No issues with mine at all. Takes and holds an edge pretty good. I use a file and then a stone to finish it and it's plenty sharp enough. I use mine lots too.

Mine holds an edge and can be made shaving sharp. No issues at all. Except for when I dropped it on pavement from 4ft... Ooops. It rolled the edge a little but no big deal.
