Bought two surplus canteens a couple of weeks ago.
One is a Swiss M84 canteen with cup. A few of the guys here are using them and Sweeneyguy did a great review on Y-T. Really impressed with it especially considering the price.

Had a bash at making a lid for the cup. Used a new bit of sheet aluminium rather than the recycled stuff I've used in the past, 0.9 mm IIRC. The handle is made from a picture hanging loop riveted on with a copper harness rivet.

Sweeneyguy used a neat little French army stove in his vid which inspired me to have ago at making a solid fuel type stove . I copied the Esbit lightweight folding stove . Made from an old shaving foam can and three stainless brackets used in construction for tying timber frames to masonry.

Used 1 hex block to boil up about 3/4 of the cup full of water, forgot a windshield :34: so used the Finn bag and myself instead. The stove fits into a itty bitty ditty bag made from material from old combats.

The other canteen is a Norwegian and came in as new condition along with a carrier with a plastic cup.

The carry pouch is well padded and has an internal pocket ,for puri-tabs I suppose.
The bottle also has a wide mouth which I read just recently on Tor's web site, a Norwegian member here , is for topping up with snow, and the bottle kept inside your clothing, like Mac's Vid on the pilots flask. Something I'd never heard of before and now twice, first from Mac and IA and now from Tors site. Not that we get it cold enough over here that often to have to try...unfortunately :2:

The canteen has a narrowing and tapered shape as well as the normal kidney shape to it . I wondered if that design was because of possibility of having to put the bottle into your clothing .

Allot of pics of bottles , sorry :o....but I seem to gather them a bit :54:

Cheers,
Pete.

Love the stove. I may have to make one like it!

Those look great! How susceptible to bending are those arms on that little stove? Once the fuel is going, is it possble to stop it and save the rest for later?

I may have to make one of those for my GI cup.

In a similar direction..
I recently got a Swiss M 32 canteen and cup - and am trying to get my head around using it in place of the USGI canteen and cup, that I have used .. uh .. Forever.
It has a bit less volume, but the profile of it seems to offer a bit better carrying options .. But .. I haven't quite pondered it out.
Any thoughts on this - that might help me decide?
... of course, I guess I need to just "Do It" a few times and see how it works for me.

Hi GA-MTN-MAN,

The arms are bendable but more than strong enough for small pots and canteen cups. I've used the same brackets before to put legs on to hobo stoves and they held the weight of the stove ,fuel and pot no problem. There are different makes though so may vary.
As for saving fuel for later , I'm using Brit issue Hex blocks so once lit that's it , so to speak :).

Hi Joe,

I've always liked the look of the M32 , don't have one though...currently

Know what you mean about their shape , It fits nicely into a bag or pouch.
This canteen is new to me so I too am chopping and changing.

Pete.

Nice work Pete :dblthumb: I really like the M84 myself. The Norwegian canteen is interesting...first time I've seen one.

There's a pocket in the Swiss breadbag that holds the M32. I've never seen any other type of carrier for them.

Thanks Dave,

Good info about the breadbag pocket . That may be of use to Joe.

Pete.

I've also worked out how to re-cork the M32. It's not difficult if you like to tinker. They're a lot less scary with a fresh cork :9:
