I have held this knife and looked at it very closely. It seems to be of superb quality. I really want one. My Mora's need some friends other than Ka-Bar.

Edit: I guess I can post a photo of it too

I was looking at this knife as well but wanted something I wouldn't worry about using all the time. I ended up gettin a Marttiini Lynx 161. It's been awesome. I would not hesitate to buy a Marttiini knife agian. If you have the money for this one I say go for it.

Edit: here's a pic of the 161 - Looks to have the same blade design

Thanks OutdoorEnvy. Saving now.

I really need a decent axe and bucksaw. I have a sufficient collection of knives (if that's possible), but these are such a huge step up from the simple Mora's (which I also love).

Too much stuff, not enough bank. Too many things to learn and do, not enough time.

So what size or kind of axe are you in the market for and what's your price range? Axes are my thing so I might have some suggestions that would help you...

Marttiini are nice knives, but I've found their stainless steel a bit soft and actually the 90% of their wilderness knives are in 420 SS at 54-56 HRC.

Speaking of axes I can suggest the machine forged Wetterlings for a great quality/price ratio.

I love my Marttiini! I can't remember which model it is off the top of my head. Purchased it from SMKW when i was down there on vacation for something like $20. It's in my rotation for an everyday user and it came razor sharp. I can definitely attest to it being a great buy for the $$.

Awesome, thanks for the offer of advise.

I've been looking at Wetterlings Forest Clearing Axe, but I think I need to (like with anything) back up and evaluate what function I need the tool to perform. I have a splitter (both a fence and a huge, all metal triangle splitter) to use while at or near home. I need something that is most versatile — felling and some splitting — while not at home.

With the understanding that different tools exist with very good reason, which one axe style and/or brand will yield the most usefulness? I also would like to not have to spend $75-100 if I can an equal tool for less.

Thoughts?

Thanks again,
David

I use the Wetterlings Large Hunter's Axe and it has been awesome. I know that's on the high end for some people but I ordered mine from the same Harry J Epstein store you linked and it was awesome. If that's on the high end I think the new Condor Woodworker axe would be a good all-round axe. There's an excellent review below, and a store called knifeworks sells this for about $40.00. Only drawback is I don't think it comes with a sheath as one is not mentioned on the site or review.

Edit: I checked Condor Knife and Tool's website and it says there it does come with a sheath. Also Council Tool's Hudson Bay axe with the 18" handle would be a good option. You can find it online for around $40 as well.
