Since I missed out on celebrating the winter solstice w/ the family the other night and since my wife (ER nurse) had tonight off, I decided to have a campfire outside tonight after dinner. So, as the goose was roasting in the oven, I went out to set up the firepit and split up some maple and beech logs. On the third log, this happened.

Crap!!!! The damn handle sheared flush w/ the base of the head. Double crap!! I've seen handles split longitudinally, but never like this. It's not even as if I missed and shanked the handle on the log.
Since I took a couple days off this week, I was planning on playing in the woods a bit. Looks like I'll be looking for a replacement handle before I do anything.
For those that are interested, it's a Snow and Neally Hudson Bay Axe. For all the trash talk I've read about them, mine has been dependable and takes a fine edge. And, axe handles break. Maybe I can use this as an excuse to buy a "backup" axe for just such an emergency.
Be well and have a Merry Christmas (or whatever holidays you may celebrate this time of year.)
