Has anyone bought and used the Coleman Anodized Aluminum cook set? I was looking at it, and have thought about picking it up in the past, but the price tag kinda makes me wonder if it is even worth it. I like the fact that it all nests together, it's smaller than a standard cook set, and it appears as though it would fit perfectly into my mess bag. Any opinions? good or bad lemme know. thanks.

I got one from Nothinghead.

I really like it! Haven't used it much yet in the woods, more at home, but it seems much sturdier than my Brunton kettle, which is very thin-gauge.

A bonus: if you leave the littler pot at home, the big one holds a Svea 123 perfectly! I don't own a 123 stove but I wish I did! Nothinghead had one and it was a sweet match to this cookset:)

i have a set. i keep part of it out in a bucket on my semi-permanant campsite, and the other part (the smaller two) at home. i'm constanting dinking around with what i carry on dayhikes, and it gets into the mix occasionally. i like how the top and bottom nest or are lids for one another.

It has thin walls but is decently built. I like that it is essentially 2 pots and 2 cups nested with plenty of room to store food or other cookware inside. The pots work well with a cheap esbit stove.

I don't keep this in my pack because I prefer the portability of canteen cups. I keep it in my trunk with a couple days of food and water.

If you don't like that it rattles, stick a thin dish rag between the two sets.

Do I recommend it? Yes, I think it's a great deal for the money.

i have the set and love the large pot that came with it. most of the time i only use the large pot. it holds one 8oz or 4oz fuel canister and leaves room at the top for my pocket rocket. i also slide my backcountry.com Ti spork inside as well and there is still enough room to cinch up the mesh bag. there is also plenty of room for my coffe, sugar, and creamer bag. the anodized finish has held up very well over time, but i do try to not scrape at the bottom with my spork. there are also measurment marks on the sides of the pots.

the smaller pot will also hold one of the smaller fuel canisters like the ones used for the jetboil.

the way i use mine with the pocket rocket makes for a very nice little compact setup.

I think it is a good value. Together it has enough capacity for two...if you split them up you essentially get two solo kits for the price.

The larger pot will stow a large gas cartridge or a coffee can (hobo stove), the small one is the right diameter for a small gas cartridge.

I think you can make it a little more versatile by adding a boil lid to each pot...like the Brunton IB cookset. That would free up the bowl/lid for use while cooking in the main pot. I plan on doing that for the set I have,

Well worth it. Like everybody else, i have the gas cylinder stored with the coleman stove in the large one. I carry the small on in my condor nalgene pouch as it nests great with a nalgene bottle.

I bought this cookset as well - no complaints here!

At first, I thought it might be a little too small for my needs, but it is really about the perfect size for me. I cook rather simply (1 pot meals that only require boiling water) so the bigger of the two pots works very well for me (I don't think I've used the smaller pot for anything yet). I especially like the measurements on the sides of the pot. If only it were stainless...

I use a supercat alcohol stove with it. Since the diameter of the pot isn't very big (comparatively speaking), I had trouble getting my water to boil until I made a taller windscreen. The taller windscreen really helps hold the heat in, and allows the sides of the pot absorb heat as well as the bottom. Inside at room temperature, I can boil 2 cups of water with aprox. half an ounce of Heet (yellow bottle) in this pot.

Sturdy, yet lightweight, and readily available at your nearest walmart.

I also own one of these sets. I added a bail to the pots, using fishing leader. And they are one of my favorite pots.

I have them, I think they are worth it, they are really light and seem to be built well. Here are a few pics I snapped to compare them to a GSI cup and Nalgene.

are both pots a usable size for one person? I might get this and split it between my boys. 25? for 2 cooksets would not be bad. by usable i mean can you do a cup or two of rice and maybe some ramen noodles? also when using the steel fishing leaders as a bail has anyone ever had them melt or otherwise fail?

thanks

huntinhick -The small pot can handle a pint of water with room to spare. There is about an inch of space from the 16 oz level to the top of the rim. It should handle a can of soup or chili without a problem...Ramen might be a little tight, but doable I think.

I happen to be goofing around with my Coleman set today and realized that the small lid could be used as an insert pan for steam baking. I took off the wire handle temporarily and set it on the 1" wide coil of roof flashing I've been using as a standoff. I'm thinking with the large lid filled with coals and set on top, it could possibly work for dry baking as well.

My wife and I use our set quite often in the summer. It is great for two people. When the grandkids are with us we add a Mors type pot to the cooking kit.

Ahhhh, Coleman Max, this has been my go to cooking kit for the last 3 or 4 years. I love it and the other poster was right about the two separate kits. I gave the smaller set to my oldest for his kit. Def. a good buy.

What stand/windscreen is that? Looks like it nests real nice with the Coleman set.

For my first ever try at dry baking I used the Coleman set. I found an aluminum "Anchovy Drainer" at the Korean Grocery store yesterday and used the top half as a heat spacer inside.

The first run was with add-water only Pancake mix. It didn't burn, but came out with a tough chewy crust. I think I prefer my pancakes done the normal way in a skillet.

The second run was with the previously posted Chocolate Cake in a cup mix. Burnt this one a little and I think the texture was better when steam baked.

I've still got biscuits and bannock to try later...right now I'm stuffed :D

how did you cut the stand?

thx

I just picked up one of these kits and I'm liking it. I find the smallest of the two "lids" is a good minimalist cook pot/cup for a dayhike. It nests fine with a Nalgene and is much lighter than a stainless GSI cup. And because it does not stand up as tall as the GSI, it packs away much smaller if you don't have it nested.

I've had this set for a few years and think it's a great deal. The smaller pot and lid is perfect for minimalist solo.
You can just fit a Ramen in the pot. When it's done and you are eating it just heat up water in the lid for coffee. Or vice versa.
They're a little small to use with an alcohol stove but I've been working on a miniature one with little flame spread.

FWIW I think the small pot is the same one as the esbit tab kit and the large is the same as the ESbit alcohol kit.

man they had a few of these on the Clearance shelf at my local walmart for $10.00... I guess I will go back and get it.... looks to promising...

Our walmart is at $18 right now. For $10 I'd buy one for sure.

I did i went back but the 6 or 10 they had on the shelf was pilfered down to just one set so i bought it anyway.... but at least I got it for $5.00 they had special today 1/2 off every red tagged item in the store..... I was lucky to get this one, another guy was looking at it and he put it in his basket then took it back out and set it on the shelf and walked off..... "SNATCH" into my basket, and score for 5 bucks.... bought four emergency car blankets which are 80% wool and 20% cotton blend for 5.00 each as well.... good day at wally world...
