Hey folks, just received a brand new wetterlings large hunters axe in the mail. The axe is beautiful except for what appears to be a small crack in the front portion of the eye. Is this something to worry a about or is it just one of cosmetic "flaws" that we all love in hand forged axes?

A very normal part of the forging process.

Your axe is perfectly fine.

I assume that inconsistencies in the eye is because they are not machine finished at the end of the process?

That may be normal, but that is not SUPPOSED to happen. As I smith (albeit not a good one) the axes/hatchets I screw up look like that. They work just fine, but I dont sell em for the same as the ones that are done right. Now this is just with the punch and drift. I usually do that when slitting the eye (kinda sorta punching, but with a chisel) and hit it in the wrong spot. Or drifting the eye when the eye is too cold.

Mine had that little ugly.

It went with a friend's neighbor's kid to Iraq.

Another guy in his company used it to open the door of a bombed burning HMMV. Apparently it was damn rough on the hatchet, but it made it through that.

I don't know what happened to it after cutting the USMC Humvee open, but I suspect it is still in Asia.

I thought they punched the eye.

I hate when that happens.
