A spear into the woods with them in place of a gun? Some times you are not allowed to pack a gun in the woods with you even though there might be a predator about. Like when I was hunting the other day I DID have a gun I saw really fresh ( as in It had just stopped raining a few munits ago andthese wher not messed up by the storm ) panther tracks that had to have been put down moments before I was there Say I was some where that firearms are not allowed. I know a spear probably wouldnt doo any good but I know people carry large blades for the same reason wich would doo even less good. Just curious, I have been thinking about it for a while now and If wyou doo where did you get it.

I have several wall hangers from Africa and a Cold Steel one to mess with. But no, I wouldn't carry a spear for protection under any normal circumstances.

then bring a teddy bear :)

a bushman might be a good idea though - u can fashion it to any natural shaft

In Maryland, one cannot carry a handgun outside of one's own residence/private property, or business that they own. They say you can get a CCW, but only if they see you fit.

In this case, a spear may sadly be the best option.

In Texas, and many other states, a spear is likely more illegal than a gun, unless you are on your own property.

I suspect many states are that way- it is the whole old fashioned "offensive weapons" mind set that came to be after the civil war.

A stout walking stick with a good sized nail spike in the end- for picking up trash- is about as likely to be effective, and more likely to be legal.

not so much. no.

Years ago I fashioned a spear and hiking stave together. I took a blade drilled a hole in it, cut out one side at top the hiking stave, bolted blade in and wrapped in para cord. You could not see it inside the stave, I figured if I needed it I would lash it up. I agree not a great defense but beats yours are hands. Would be good for foraging, fishing, and such.

I don't take a (long) knife to a gun fight (or predator fight). Thanks,

ezra

I wish I could, but it would not go well here in southern Michigan, a machete is borderline let alone a spear. Guns are still legal though forthemostpart.

I can see the spear being far more effective if the choice is carrying a knife or a spear to a fight with an animal. Standoff distance is good.

I can see even more issues carrying the spear than carrying a gun in dealing with humans. What's the law? Do any of the law enforcement in the area even have a clue about the law themselves? Unlike a slung or holstered firearm carry certainly looks more menacing. What reactions will that get?

There is a reason that Theodore Roosevelt said to carry a big stick and not a big gun. In states where guns are a problem a simple walking stick with a semi sharp end would probably not raise any eye brows and is better than nothing at all.

Question answered, and getting off bushcraft topic.
