I went for a walk in our woods today to go look for dried weeds to use to make small trees for my brothers HO scale train set up. It was gorgeous out there.. is it REALLY January?

Found tons of stuff.. block I can use for a fire pit come spring. An old white coffee pot ..in good shape but missing the top handle for the lid wich was still attatched. Some spackleware thats rusted but will make good flower pots.

So after filling my bucket up with weeds.. I went to the barn to find some styrofoam to put the 'trees' on when done. I found the styrofoam, pulled on it and a bag came down. Whoaa... I see a tin. Opened up the bag and found some cookie and wine tins. cooool.....

Under that bag was an old box. Hey... whats the funky handle? Pulled on it and its a fry pan. Not cast iron that I can tell. And the name stamped on it says from what I can tell... EVONOG? huh.

So now I needed something to cut a smaller chunk off that big chunka foam. Start poking around..and find this axe. mmmmm... On one side it says 2 1/4 and the other "made in Germany". The handle has about 9 nails in it at the top to hold the iron in. From what I can tell the blade itself isnt chipped or dented. I like the weight of it.

Theres so much 'stuff' around here.. I've found an iron plate to use on the picnic table and my 'fires'.. lots of expanded steel for grates.. wrought iron gate... square tubing made of iron. I may be a busy gal this spring.

Any help on the pan and axe?

If that axe was made in Germany than maybe it is Solingen made?

Looks like a good axe project. I have one in progress myself, on a 3.5 lb council tool axe head.

Nice find! Scour up the skillet and re handle the axe and your in business!

Looks like a couple of really neat projects, great find! I really like the axe.

I found one of these steel pans in the woods next to a brook in Bingham Maine. Cleaned it up with wetdry paper. Used if for years until I broke it. It was much lighter than cast so I carried it ice fishing.

Skillet ought to clean up and season just like a cast iron. It will be lighter, but more prone to develop hot spots than would a true cast iron ware skillet.

Looks like a real good bit of trail ware.

The axe is likely just in need of rehandling to be a long term piece of gear.

good finds.

Marsh, can I come poke around on a walk and keep what I find :)D?

Great finds indeed!

And if you don't want to restore or use them, then just clean them and use them as (wall)decorations. Gives you something to think/dream about, when sitting at home, looking at them....

Wow, I want to wander around your place too!

That pan is a stamped sheet metal job, carbon steel. I have 2 of them that my Grandma used to use when my Dad was a kid. As others have said, you can clean it up and season it just like cast iron, but it will be more prone to hot spots. Good piece of cooking gear though.
