I dug up this jersey style axe about 20 years ago. I knew I still had it but wasn't sure where. Finally found it and glad I held off on buying a handle for it as the eye is smaller than I thought. Going to attempt to clean it up and make it usable again.

Going to need a nice long bath in vinegar. As long as the pitting isn't too deep in the bit, you might something left to make an edge out of.

I look forward to what comes of it.

I'm picking up vinegar this afternoon on my way home from work. I have a larger axe, in the same style, I dug up around the same time. It is currently badly hung and will be redone after I finish this one.

Try a wire brush on a drill, it will come out nicely blued if it not to badly rusted, I know that will work with surface rust.

Oh, yeah. I am awaiting the processing pics. I don't just want to see how purty it is afterwards, I want a good education along da way.

after doing some reading, I've decided to try electrolysis on the axe. I'll use the vinegar I picked up on some mauls that need cleaning and rehafting

Make sure to knock off all the loose rust with a wire wheel or equivalent. No sense in wasting time on that with electrolysis. Use it to get the hard stuff off.

class work has finally settled down to the point where i had time to work on this again. this is just after starting.

I'm over here grinding my teeth, waiting for the "after the electro bath" pictures! How'd it work?!?

this is after 5-6 hours. i'm going to put it back in tomorrow weather permitting.

this partial mark wasn't visible before but is too far gone to make out.

It's actually looking really good! I might stop there though, the residue rust is kind of a pit filler of sorts. Any further and you might have the surface of the moon on your axe. Keep us appraised for sure, and nice work with the electrolysis.

electrolysis is complete. still not sure if it's salvageable but i'm going to finish cleaning up the head before handling it. one side has lots of shallow pits the other has a few deep pits. the maker mark is a little more discernible now.

Looks like a Kelly True Temper makers mark. They run a line over their logo as pictured below. There is some variation in their mark, as it doesn't always read VULCAN or KELLY WORKS. It's a good axe, and a Jersey Pattern. It does look VERY serviceable. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the pics of the electrolysis, I have a couple heads I want to try that on.
Looking good!
