OK I got a flint and steel kit in a giveaway over the Summer. I kept looking at it sitting on the table next to my desk and kept thinking about trying it. Well today I decided to give it a try. First 15 minutes no joy so I watch 3 or 4 youtube videos on how to do it. Go back to it and 2 minutes later ....Fire!
I have played at it a time or two in the past but this was my first serious effort and I did it. Now I will have to dig up my bow drill kit. I packed it up in my recent double move and haven't found it yet. I think building a fire with friction in the freezing rain we are having right now would be the biggest fire making achievement for me to date. Feels really good to do something right so quickly.
Char cloth the size of a dime, jute nest about the size of a 50 cent piece chunk of flint about the same size and a U shaped piece of iron. Now I think I need to make myself a fire wallet.
Anyone know if there is chaga, fire fungus, in Indiana?

Congrats on your success! Flint & steel is about the only way I start our fire pit now, well, maybe I 'cheat' and use a firesteel rod sometimes. Nature Girl is still trying with her bowdrill....lots of cussin' but I'm sure she'll get it one day.

Well when I got up this morning I had another try, worked in under 5 minutes. An hour later took a little longer because I experimented with using a very small piece of char cloth. Well that didn't work out too well. Anyway it looks like I'll be trying to become an expert at this before I can move on. I also found out that not all jute is created equally as far as fire tinder goes. The more supple kind makes better nests than the stiffer coarser kind. Both work but the finer works better.
