Awkward title but i like alliteration :)

Took the kids to a rebuilt historical site up here in Ontario, Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons. It was the first European settlement built here back in the 1600's. Real fun place, one of the hands-on activities they had was flint and steel fire making. I've made friction fire with a bow drill before, and use a firesteel all the time but have never tried actual flint, steel and charcloth. I've read about it so many times on this forum and seen a lot of great posts and pics that it felt like I'd done it before. I held the cloth at the edge of the flint, took a few swipes with the steel like I'd seen demonstrated here, and quickly had an ember going. Took some twine nesting material they had available and blew it into flame.
When the person working there looked over and saw smoke and flame, the look on her wide-eyed face was priceless. She came over and said "In all the years I've worked here I've never seen a visitor get a flame before!" haha and started asking me questions.

God bless this site and all you fine folks, I owe it to your shared wisdom! :)
