I've pretty much given up on scarves since I've gotten the neckwarmer. They work excellent, tuck well into the jacket, can be pulled up over your chin and mouth. Best part is when its just around your neck you don't even know its there, unlike a scarf which always has a tail flippety-flapping...

Coupled with a heavyweight balaclava and touque over top you are set for the worst of things...

I do like the shemagh scarves, but not as a scarf. I find they are awesome wood shavings catchers, water filters, big triangle bandages etc., but I really don't like them as a scarf/hat that much...

I love my wool army OD Green scarf. Not sure I could go away from it lol.

I agree your neck pantyhose is more practical though =)

Is that good in milder weather or just frigid and windy? Like cool enough for jacket maybe 40's.

Honestly, in and of itself, I think it is suited to much colder weather. I like using one when I go skiing to help cut the wind, where the combination of winter weather and a headwind can chatter teeth and freeze boogers in mere seconds. It is also a lot more convenient, however less versatile, than a scarf. That is the reason I prefer it for skiing, and prefer scarves for winter hikes.

I carry a couple during the winter. They aren't fleece but a little thinner. They work really well and are flame resistant.

I've used the SAS headover for years. Polypro, very versatile. A couple of years back, Swisslink had some similar scarves/tubes, OD green, wool, and somewhat longer than the SAS headover. Great piece of kit...

Thanks, I am from mobile and we rarely get super cold weather. I love stuff like that and my mom makes stuff with polar fleece.

i really like neck warmers - i have been using them for years on the Harley and now that i hike in N GA in the winter i use them on really cold hikes

The neck warmer or scarf isn't really meant to be windproof se. Unlike your main hat which needs to have some ability to block wind, the neck warmer sort of snugs between your collar of your coat. It sort acts like a buffer between the opening of your coat and neck.

I'm not crazy about fleece hats (touques), but a fleece balaclava can be nice especially when worn under a more robust wool cap or heavy acrylic one. Back to neck warmers. In my walk today, which was 32 degrees F on the button, I was able to comfortably wear my regular Woolrich shirt jack and the neck warmer along with wool touque kept me as warm as a button. Without it, my shirt jack would have felt a bit wanting.

I haven't ever tried one of those dickie's - which is a hoodie without the shirt. They have a wide flap of material that lays under your coat. How many you sport a dickie? I promise not to make fun of you afterwards :D

Ken - I bought something a couple tears ago called a Headsock, it can cover the the neck or the neck and head with a an opening for the face. I rarely wear it, it is too warm! It never leaves my pack in the winter though.....

Ken, I wear a wool Buff like that... Love it..! I tuck it in my shirt and pull the top up over my nose if I get really cold.

Wool Buff here too! They are not very heavy At all but do a great job but I have a fleece necker too that has a mouth and nose slot for those really cold and windy days

GI wool scarf, hard to beat for the money. I am thinking about a neck warmer though, REI has a TNF one on sale right now.

I agree with everything you have said Ken. Have a military surplus scarf I've used a few times but mostly now use a cheap baclava from K-mart or my under armor one from cabelas. Both work better than the scarf for me.

Interesting thread: I too have given up on scarves, albeit they're still all the rage around these parts.

I have this stretchy neck-warmer thing that also configures into a toque (glad you explained what that was - some folks might not know) or a tight hood... really a great thing. More windproof than my fleece or knitted things - it's the bomb.

But do you guys find they flatten out your schnoz, making it hard to breath sometimes, or is it just my big beak???

Grammatically Challenged...

Are you properly wearing your scarf? Over the years, and many women later, I've learned a lot from them that's not only fashionable, but also practical. Using a Parisian Knot seems to work best for me. Once the scarf's tied, it's to be worn completely inside the coat for maximum warmth, and any number of other ways depending upon what the temperature is.

A scarf's intended purpose, in my opinion, is to stop the bellows effect during movement as well as heat escape from the back of the neck, so if it's not put inside of the coat, it's effectiveness is compromised.

This video may be handy.

Make that three... I love my wool buff so much because it works well as a neck warmer/balaclava in the cold and also works as a bandana in the heat. It can be a decent skull-cap or skull-cap liner as well. It's just incredibly versatile.

Hmm, now you are giving me some ideas....Wonder if they make really small diameter neck warmers :D :D :D

Really....really small diameter. :D

Years ago, I got one of these style things in blaze orange for hunting. A few guys chuckled at it. It was really cold that winter. The next year, lots of people had them.

I have a swiss army wool one that does fit tight to my face. The tricky thing about balaclava's is that they usually come in one size fits all, but curiously each brand has a different size. Good to find something that works well for you.

Well, simply cutting the fingers off of fleece globes is too small :D

That is pretty cool. I like that it is multi-layered. The best toques and balaclavas come in more multiple layers of material I find.

Here in Argentina is common to wear two: One for the neck and one for the head, with a drawstring and stopper.
Cheap as air and pretty comfortable!

Those fleece neck warmers are great.
I got one in woodland camo from a local guy who makes them, it may be the best $5 I've ever spent on winter clothing.

I agree, they're great! Mine is fleece and is hunter orange on one side and camo on the other. I have one of those Polartec head thingies as posted above, but it's all camo, pretty much useless for hunting. I'm going to look for one that's dual colored or at least hunter orange.

I too am from Alabama: we don't do cold around here!!!! :18:
