Flint and steel Friday

I’m gonna start taking notes to keep up with this. I didn’t even know titanium strikers were a thing.

I have one, and personally don't care for them...you have to strike them harder, which dulls flint more quickly, it's trickier to get a spark, there are less sparks and it feels gummy when the titanium strikes the flint. This of course is just my experience and not meant to dissuade anyone from using titanium.

With a steel striker, you don't even actually have to, "strike" them...a good flick will actually get you sparks, but not so with titanium...

Yeah, I don’t plan on getting one. I’m just gonna work with what I got. But I do have a citizen dive watch that’s body and bracelet are all high quality titanium. Just wanna take note that if I had to, titanium can strike something. Hahaha gonna keep that in the back of my head.

alright, I’m moving on from this. I went and dug around in this tree that was struck by lightning. Some parts are punky and burned. I tried the same setup (non-charred jute and the wood) being super hopeful I can get it going again once I saw how punky it was. And I can’t get anything out of it.

Now I’m all dirty in my church clothes, and I didn’t take gloves to get at the tree haha.

This little side quest has waisted three days now. I’m gonna just make charred jute and collect more viable material this week.

This one is a bust! Haha Thanks for the help guys, my next goal is yucca stalks.

So I took a screenshot of a video I made blowing until I got lightheaded haha. but if you used burned wood that is not properly prepared, you MIGHT find a place that will take a spark and make the tiniest little ember. But in this case it does not spread and I can’t blow it hard enough to get it to light any unprocessed material. And I wouldn’t do this if I had prepared material anyways.

I guess might isn’t a good statistic. Hahaha and my extreme focus on this can rival the most extreme cases of autism.

This is my last post about it…. Hahaha for the sake of my own sanity, and everyone around me…if I try it anymore…. Please ban me.

Now a question I do have. Is about technique on striking. I’ve been resting the steel lightly on, or hovering over what I want to light and coming down on it with the flint. And doing that I can light charcloth.

But I’ve noticed everyone else pinching the flint and the material you want to light in the same hand.

Dumb question about technique…. Is coming down on the steel a bad technique?

It is l the method I use almost all the time. About the only time I put the charred material on the stone is when I am teaching a class. The other exception is when I am trying to get a very fine sliver of uncharred mullein to take a spark.

Also there is no such thing as a dumb question.
