I just recently started flint knapping and i absolutely love it. I made my own Abo tools out of some elk/whitetail antler i had laying around. Sorry i cant post pics do to a lack of a camera. So far i have made one arrowhead out of a piece of obsidian i had layin around.

I wanted to hear from some other knappers on here and see if anybody had any tips and tricks for a newbie.

Thanks very much

Doc.

I have heard that elk antler is a little soft for knapping, which means you will be going through quite a few and might get better results with something harder.. I have been wanting to get started in knapping but all of my other hobbies have been preventing it. If you can get your hands on some moose antler, it might make it a little easier and last longer. I know it is the prefered material for most abo knappers from what I have read.

Wish I had more tips and tricks to help you out. I could use a few myself.

Good luck!

Yea, the more I thought about it, I seem to recall that caribou antler was too soft. I might just have to look that back up. Thanks for the clarification.

Well good luck on your journey, one lesson make preform after preform when you get good at it and sick off them, make more then study points and continue on your journey lol! Iv'e been knapping for 7 years now when I get rusty I go back to making preforms it reinforces the basics

I found an experienced flint knapper and spent a Sunday afternoon with him. It was worth 100 hours of trying to figure things out on my own. I still am not that great but now I know the basics it is just developing the muscle memory and ability to "see" the point in the rock.
