I went up to Rose Valley in Ojai Ca last weekend for a quick two nighter. I am used to the cold being from AK, but I was nowhere near prepared for these two nights (stupid stupid stupid :34:). First night froze and didn't sleep. Second night tried a tarp over the tent, space blanket to trap heat in the tent, and hot rocks...also froze but not that bad until about 5am, just about time to pee :( Anyway made a good go of it, and collected enough wood for a huge roaring fire most of the night, but I wish I would have tried harder. All of the water froze...even the MRE's! Well no I know 3300 ft January in Ca is not a walk in the park. All of that to say fun time, good practice, made a sweet friction fire set :) enjoy the miserable pics

pardon my goofy car :)

Hah, I quick glanced at your pics as the thread was loading and for a second I thought that was a DeLorean ! :18:

Sounds like too much fun there! (yes, sarcasm...at the situation, not you) Oh yeah, cold can creep in and catch even the skilled unawares! Amazing how fragile we can be, eh?

Sounds like you at least had firewood and gave it a good run and stuck it out!

Another +1 on the Vehicross! I've only seen a couple of them. there's one around here somewhere. I see it every couple weeks it seems. Outgrowth of the Amigo/Rodeo platform isn't it?

It's more of an amalgamation or vehicles thus vehi...cross :) its more trooper some amigo all bad a offroad monster. The same torque system as Porsche, shocks fit an H1 and springs fit a dodge 1500. It takes me everywhere. The only parts I can't get readily are body panels but the online community is pretty strong for all 3k American owners :)

Nice of you to post the fact it was a struggle - and glad you enjoyed your trip!

as the owner of an 88 samurai....I can tellyou ....you'll appreciate the vehicross more and more as time goes by! the oddity/rareity of it will be a plus - and hey....you even have power options and heat and A/C! If it gets you where you want to go....that's the best part, right?! :D

I would love to be able to help you figure out why you were cold/ what went wrong, as i am sure many others would as well.

Let us know what the temperature was. What kind of/rating sleeping pad(s) were you using, and what kind of/rating of sleeping bag you were using, if any. Also what were you wearing when 'sleeping'?

Hey you bucked up and made a go of it for a second night! WTG brother!
Oh, and when I first saw your vehicle, I thought it was an RC car! HAHA!

So, what was the issue? Sleeping bag? Pad? Not enough layers?

Cheers,
Mike
(new here, BTW)

Had a similar night on the north shore of Lake Superior one night - wife and dotter got the nice warm bag and matress (the way it should be) and I froze. Wrapped myself in anything I could find, wore all my clothes and froze my butt off. I hate those nights! Grrrr! :(

so you guys are not allowed to laugh at me :)
20 degree North Face bag wrapped in a BOL emergency bivi, and a snugpack bivi on the outside of it all.
no sleeping pad so the ground robbed me of heat
wearing thermals under it all and wool socks, fleece watch cap
Ate MRE's all weekend so the carbs were there, but not the fat and bread carbs I'm used to

Here is the kicker...I'm going back out tomorrow night to retake the night, and do this thing properly, I'm going to make a shelter and sleep like a KING!

Bringing the bag, sleeping pad, bivi, thermals, fleece blanket, and losing the tent for a lean to with a stove I just made out of a 20mm ammo can. Let's kick the cold in the balls and retake the night like God intended us to!

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-28
