This past weekend I visited my parents place in SW Mississippi. My dad needed some help patching some fence so me and the boys went to help. We were there about ten minutes when my 11 years comes up telling us to come see a dead bear. At first I thought he was wrong but sure enough there was a dead black bear we called the game wardens and they came out and got the bear and turned the fence row into a crime scene. They shipped off the bear in a body bag to Jackson and then started looking for who did it. They caught him Saturday. Come to find out this guy shot it, cut it's ears off, drove around and bragged about it and then dumped it off the side of the road. Well black bear are protected in lower MS and he got himself in a heap of trouble. probably some time in the federal pen and several hundred thousand in fines and reparations. The bear was one that had been reintroduced and the ears were tagged. He is going to have to buy a new wild bear that has to be trapped up north. I have nothing against hunting or even bear hunting if there is a sustainable population but to just shoot a protected species, maim it and then just dump it is a shame.

What a dirt bag (I want to be more explicit but this is a family board). I am glad you called F&G and they tracking this scum down.

That's a shame... pointless...

From the LA hunting rules book... For a Louisiana Black Bear (a species, not necessarily just a bear in the state of LA) Federal penalty is 6 months and/or $25k in fines. State penaltie is $10,000 and/or 1 year in jail. I'd imagine it's similar in MS.

Horrible that some people ruin the reputation of gun-owners, hunters, and other conservationists by doing something so cruel and selfish. Shame.

Thanks for posting, hopefully it was a great time to share about poaching and conservation with your boys.

What a bleedin' idiot!!
In more than one way....... I hope they'll teach him a lesson he'll never forget...

Glad they caught him. Glad he bragged about it. Idiot.

The real high cost is not the fines but having to buy a new bear because it was introduced and therefore owned by the state. they include every cost from when the bear is found until they release a new one. The game warden said the last guy who killed one about ten years ago ended up about 200 grand in the hole when everything was tallied up.
I was able to share with my kids about the effects and repercussions of poaching. They are both hunters but they understood that this was wrong.

Good on you guys for calling F&G. Glad they caught the SOB and hopefully he does max punishment for his stupidity

Poachers are criminals. Braggarts are idiots.

To paraphrase The Warning, I hope he learns firsthand why the call it the Pokey.

great that they caught him. what a jerk. Problem is, people like that are only reinforced in their views of "I should be able to do what I want, damn game wardens/govt, etc" when they get thrown in jail and big fines. Not saying he shouldnt be at all...just that probably all his friends will go out and try to shoot another one just to spite the law......

And we are supposedly the most intelligent of the species...........

On the positive side at least like most poachers the guy was stupid and bragged about being a criminal. I hope he gets the max.

What a shame. He just slowed the chances of having a population of bear to hunt for future generations. He's what I like to call a thief.

I'm not against hunting but what this low life did is inexcusable! If he had been down on his luck and lost a job and need food for his family, I could see that even if your breaking the law. But he needs to spend a few years in jail with a hefty fine.:12:

Its a shame that he wasted all that meat. Bear steaks are good. I dont understand cutting off the ears either, most poachers cut off the feet, and take the gall bladders.

This is just aweful man. Im sorry for the bear. I hate to see people kill animals unnecessarily.
Glad the the game wardens caught the guy, and that hes getting whats coming to him. Hopefully that will discourage people from killing animals in a protected species.

Sounds like one dirtbag will get his just reward! Thank you for doing the right thing, and in teaching the next generation (your children) the difference between being a lawful, ethical, sportsman and poaching.

Found out a little more info today. the guy was in his mid forties and a life long resident of the area. Definitely old enough to know better. The game warden's think he cut off the ears because the bear had tags on both sides. Trying to keep the bear from being identified or some such. They know all the dang bears anyway it makes about as much sense as cutting the ears off a movie star before you dump them (no offense to movie stars they are probably fine people...).

I cant understand why he did it? kill, mutilate and discard and thankfully get caught ...there seems to be no point at all.

bear

Its unfortunate, and too bad it happened but really there's more than enough bears in the country. In some places too many.

Instead of jail (which will cost the state even more $$$$$) they should have had this fellow pay for the restoration of this species and actually work in field with the game dept for community service. He could then become part of an solution instead of an problem.

that is despicable, and what is worse is the image it will give hunters.

He's not a hunter, He's a Poacher! And you will need to point this out to those who are uneducated in such matters. Poachers kill for profit or worse, Just to do so.
Hunters pay for upkeep of hunting lands and abide by rules posted by states F&G

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but i respectfully disagree. there are very few black bears in LA and MS... the few remaining pockets are in the Atchafalaya Basin and the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. I for one would LOVE to see them back in the wild here, with an open season for hunters. Yes, in some places there are dangerous bears, but these aren't grizzlies or brown bears. They're small black bears, once native.

as for his punishment, you are dead on. thank you for suggesting it.

Black Bear Kill

I appreciate all the support for the Bear. This was indeed senseless and provides fuel to those who would take away our gun rights. This is an endangered sub-species, the Louisiana Black Bear. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Black Bear Conservation Coalition. We are a group of landowners and representatives of the the various State Wildlife agencies from MS, AR, LA, TX and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. We are restoring hardwood habitat to the benefit of all wildlife and trying to re-establish the bear in its former range. It is making a remarkable recovery and we hope to get it delisted as endangered in the near future.

Glad they caught him. I'm pro-hunting, but detest poachers. Up here, they're after the gall bladders, I guess they're in demand overseas for something.

Black bear meat is supposed to be pretty good, too. I've never had it, but heard it's similar to pork.
