My brother recently returned home from Helmand full of vim and vigor, ready to risk my life. He's been making me ice climb haha. I needed a pair of gaiters. I haven't owned any in quite awhile and since money's tight I decided to make a pair out of lonely tent fly I've been trying to re-purpose. I took some process pics for those of you who are like me and benefit from gratuitous imagery...

cutting out, got lucky on the available shapes here. sneak peek of the lawnmower deck forge in the background.

I flipped and sewed the edges to make a hem and to run the cordage

I added another layer here

the velcro, their each different because I was "designing" (i.e. screaming and crying) as I went

I made this kind of lock loop assembly by sewing the stretch cord in place on one end and pulling it through the hem and adding the..slider-thing..what the heck are those called again?

The boot strap is just webbing with velcro. this didn't work all that well, I need to make a loop and double-back before I climb tomorrow.

I suck at the sewing machine and these were pretty slapped together the night..err entire day, before but they worked fine otherwise the next pair will be beefier.

thanks!

Good job. I have some similar tent material left over from another project and you've just added another thing to the wish list for me. Thanks.
