Going Gear Crazy: BK9 Customization/patina (pic heavy and a howto)
I was inspired to do a forced patina on Sally. All in all I feel that her makeover turned out very well, the project also got me addicted to making some gear!
I wrapped her up nice and tight with a paracord "twist" and i also piled some grapefruit on top of her to get a good looking(in my opinion) finish.
EDIT: After a request on how i did the patina, i will tell my secrets:
1-First I took my blade and sanded it a little to roughen up the painted on finish. (Ick!)
2-I then purchased some scotch painter remover, advertised as safe. this stuff is good and clean, no gloves and I even did it in my kitchen.
3-I applied the paint remover for 2 hours at a time until all the paint was gone.
4-I washed the blade.
5-I then proceeded to slice a grapefruit into round slices and removed the pulpy stuff from the white stuff.
6-I put a layer of grapefruit under the knife and then stacked grapefruit on top.
7-I waited overnight and today after school I removed the grapefruit and to my horror... it looked terrible!
8-So I calmed myself and then washed her off to remove some very very very dark oxidization stains.
9-Then I was still not satisfied because it looked like there were some pee spots on it, it was not totally covered, high contrast from dark to shiny steel.
10-So I soaked an OLD t-shirt in white distilled vinegar and wraped the shirt around my knife for a little under an hour(40-45 minutes?)
11-Washed the sucker off and VOILA!
*note- in the process she recieved some light rust on her naked surface so i took some very fine steel wool and rubbed it off before continuing ANY further patina. I am not sure if you have to,(pretty sure you have to) i did it just in case.
Sneak peak.
I like the orange and grey combo, whats yalls opinions?
The other side.
Close up of the wrap and lanyard setup, more on that in a bit.
Close up of her business end.
The other side of the her.
Okay, so when i made the lanyard i just took the extra rope and knotted it. it suprisingly work out perfectly!
It fits in the hand nicely.
I really like the lanyard because i can just drop the knife and Sally will not turn towards and possibly injure me due to the perfect fit around my hand. Due to it being around my hand and not my thumb (and wrapped around) means that i can close my fist and hold it tight and it also will not swing around as much
Due to the lanyard coming out at one side i can easily swing the knife into and out of my hand safely. Sally jumps right into my hand just brilliantly every time(or maybe she just loves me!)
Thanks for your time guys! i hope you learned something new!
ps: Expect some more stuff from me, i have a hammock ready to be photo-rendered and i also have a backpack that is BEGGING to be modified!
