Correct. Prunus serotina

Check out the videos in this post. This first video sets up the second of which I show how to use a field guide for trees and the tree happens to be a black cherry

trapper

Looks like black cherry to me. Check the leaves; if the midvein on the underside of the leaf has some pubescense that would confirm it.

Thanks! I think I need a new field guide, I got to the simple alternate part but that left me with 40-50 choices. I thought the bark would be a giveaway but even that photo in the book isnt great. thanks again.

Some field guides won't show different stages of bark either.

Definitely black cherry. Burnt corn flake looking bark is a give away. Also the leaves and twigs have chocolate smell to them if you break them up.

When taking tree ID in college, I tried using a book that had pictures instead of line drawings and I always had a harder time. Using the keys and looking at twigs, buds and leaf scars always got me the answer.

Just out of curiosity, what field Guide are you using now?

I thought it would be easier by eliminating species not in my area. I was able to ID a lot of trees. I think they tried to focus too much on the fruit of the cherry and didn't really show a good pic of the bark or leaves.
