So, after picking this hewing hatchet up at the flea market in March of last year i finally got around to sharpening it and fitting a new handle to it. This will be my main hatchet for taking hiking/camping "since it's my only one". It's a 19" scouts hatchet handle replacement. The one side is flat. This was originally created for carpenters to rough lumber to size before planing it smooth. I figured it would be better at carving than making kindling but time will tell.

In the background of the main hatchet photo you can see a piece of metal I picked up today when I got the replacement handle. It's a scraper designed to fit into a saws-all. It's the exact pattern that I have seen for a gutter Adze blade. It's a little thin but I figure it should be easy enough to bend to the right size and fit to a branch to try out as an elbow adze.

I had to spend quite a bit of time on the wet grinder since the previous owner put a back bevel on it. :17: probably ground away 10 years worth of steel.

It's a pretty old Ax head since you can see indentations where someone used it to hammer in old style cut nails. You can also see steel forge welded onto blade end. Which is weird since my file did almost nothing to the body of the hatchet so the main portion is pretty tough steel.

Looking good buddy! I'm curious as to how an offset head will perform at chopping/splitting tasks. Let us know how it works once you've tested it. I also like the adze idea. I've been looking at ebay for adzes and the small ones all seem to be expensive. Your idea sounds like a good alternative. Get on that project so I can copy it if it works. LOL.
