went to my favorite area today wayne n.f. for a hike and lunch out in the woods, and finally got my cast iron pan reseasoned. i thought i would do breakfast for lunch. well it felt like a spring day today it was 60 and sunny, i dont know but the weather has been weird this winter, hardly no snow and warm temps.

for the fire i took my ferro rod and sparked up some char cloth.

i made a nest out of some jute twine and put the char cloth in it and it started smoking right away.

after a few good blows on it, it lit up very fast.

i threw a little bit of fatwood strips on the fire and it took off really nice.

Looks like you had some real fun! Thanks for taking us along.

Great photos! Breakfast is great any time of day. Your skillet is looking good, and so is all of your other cook gear. I have the Swedish army set like you are brewing tea in, and a USGI mess kit. You really made me wish that I was ditching class today and heading for the woods.

Finding that old equipment was pretty neat. It's amazing how nature reclaims ugly junk people leave behind and harmonizes it into a curious point of interest. One wonders what it would have been used for. In my part of the country, we usually find old farm equipment that was worn out and left behind.

Just getting my cast iron skillet re-seasoned, now I just need to get one of those grills. :) Thanks for the pics. Looks like a great day and you have to love the simple ones. peaceful.

Looks like a great trip again.
The finds are astonishing. Do you think the water from the well would still be drinkable?

It's nice to see the face behind the name, too!!

thanks,

but for drinking out of the well i would say no, if you look real hard at the water you can actually see the water bubbling. i dont know if it was an air pocket in the well causing the bubbling or some type of natural gas seeping into the well. an exposed well like that, any rodent or droppings could have got into the well, making the water contaminated.

That second set of wheels looks like it has tracks for a belt on one side and a water wheel on the other. Maybe for use with the well? That lunch made me hungry. Gotta go find something to eat now :)

Very nice outing
That area was strip mined? Its regeneration back to wild is coming along nice.Looks as if the area may be decent for whitetail deer or maube turkeys
That old stuff should be at a museum
Thanks

If only a lot of that scrap metal could find it's way home.
What kinds of stuff could be made from it.

We have stuff like that around Hazelton, PA. The Humboldt industrial park used to be Paragon Adventure Park. Some of the trails took us to a huge cat D9 size Diesel engine sitting on a anchored platform. Our guide said it used to winch a dredge bucket across the coal mine.

Very cool stuff. I appreciate those pics. I think I just figured out how not to burn my eggs.:34:

"now I just need to get one of those grills" I've used 1/4 square iron tent pegs as a grill across rocks or logs.
Very nice trip.

Looks like a great trip the Allagash river in Maine has similar finds of equipment left from the logging industry. How is that Leatherneck?

Great trip Buddy! I wish I was down south with ya! Breakfast for lunch is awesome isn't it?
Glad you got out, again, while I was at work, again, wishing I was in the woods, again!
GOOD TIMES!!!!

its a very nice knife, right out of the box it was razor sharp. the extra wide kraton/rubber handle has a very nice grip to it, and it has a thick steel butt cap, so i can see this knife getting alot of use.

Looks like you had a great hike and lunch. I like that grill also, is that something you bought or had mad.

Great Post Buddy!
Looks like a great time right there.
