Just thought I would share my homemade leather preserver. it works well as a water repellent and I use it on all sorts of my gear from my scnhee's
pack boots to the stocks on my rifles. Please let me know what you think.

beeswax & petroleum jelly melted together?

edit - sorry posted at the same time.
interesting - where do you get bear fat?

I use bees wax and mink oil for most of my black iron and leather, I get an old cookie tin and put it by the forge door till its hot then mix the 2 till its a bit thicker then hair conditioner. When I use it on leather I leave it cool and rub it in off a rag, at that time its pretty thick, on metal I let it get hot and brush it on. From time to timeI get natural tallow from animal fat and use that but it has an odd smell (Always).

Mine is Trewax,Bees Wax and Mink Oil for a all purpose mix.
Use Trewax for wood. All of my, applicable, hunting gear including boots will have the all purpose mix added prior to going out.

All purpose mix ratio, I use the guess and by golly measurement method.
1/4 Trewax
1/4 Bees wax
!/2 Mink oil

You should try to get some bears fat. If they haven't been eating fish, then it has almost no smell.

Lately I have been using Obenauf's Leather Preservative. It says it was originally designed for wildland firefighters and it seems to work really well as long as you get it to soak into the leather. I normally use a hair dryer for that

I use beeswax, neatsfoot and pine pitch. Works great, smells awesome.

AK49,
Thank you for listing your mixture. Never have used a mixture of beeswax and pitch but I have used 1/3 beeswax, 1/3 deer tallow or bear oil and 1/3 Neatsfeet Oil with success.
