I posted earlier this week of the generous pipe and tobacco gift box Bard sent me. I've been 'practicing' loading and smoking the pipes and am starting to get the swing of them. They really help with my cigarette cravings, plus Currahee Rose loves the smell of 'Trout Stream' aromatic. I just want to know and see how you other pipe smokers carry your pipe and fixins' out into the bush when you go.

And thanks again Bard, your gift has really helped me in my quest to stop smoking cigarettes!

My dad always used a belt holster and caped his pipe with a perforated wind cap to keep any sparks contained

If I am wearing a coat or jacket I carry the tobacco pouch in one pocket and the pipe in the other. If its warmer I carry the pouch in a back pocket and the pipe in a shirt pocket.

I have a hard case for my meerschaum calabash that I use most of the time. Either throw that in my bag or in a pocket on my vest. I found an old metal pipe that unscrews to fit a corn cob bowl and might try that sometime soon. Just need to figure out how to make the bowls...

I really like the belt loop idea. I do that when I go to Renaissance Faires and the like, but would be afraid of it getting lost in the woods. Maybe with some kind of retention strap though... Great! Another thing to put on my belt!!! HAHA

I think I would cry getting a wiff of Trout and Stream smoke. THat was my dads choice of tobacco. I do miss that man dearly.

He was told to cut back on his pipe smoking...so he cut the bowl down. Oddest looking pipe after that... but we all laughed at it. We made sure he took it with him to the beyond along with a full tobacco bag.

I couldnt tell you the many many times we as kids went with dad to go look for his pipe because he lost it somewhere in the great outdoors... fields, creeks, lakesides... He would bang it out against his wedding ring..then plop it into his front pants pocket. How he lost it.. I'll never know. But now when I think back on these 'rescues' it may have been a ruse to get us kids to go exploring.... Mmmmm...... if so, Thanks dad.

Sorry for hijacking.. Its just been awhile since I've seen that tobacco mentioned.

Marsh.

I carry mine with no special ceremony. It goes in my front left pocket. Most pipe's bowls will allow for a U.S. dime or penny to sit snugly in the top to prevent the contents from falling out.

I find a new Dr. Garbrow pipe allows a dime perfectly, and after a long time of use, the top of the bowls burn wider to allow for a penny.

On some other pipes, Canadian coinage works better, or a steel washer of the right diameter.

When I make my own pipes, I always drill the bowl to the same diameter of a dime or penny.

Whatever method you use, always hold your thumb over the bowl after your finished to insure it is snuffed properly and completely out. Otherwise it brings a whole new meaning to "hot pockets". ;-)

I carry mine in a pouch I made, I used to keep it in my pocket for easy access but found that I only ever smoked it in camp anyways so I started putting it up for the walk in and out.

Another thing about the wind cap.
In the rain, my dad would put the cap on his pipe and smoke it upside down

Yeah he liked his pipe.. I'd bet I have 50-60 of his old ones... every one of them with the stems chewed through

I used to carry it in my pocket or the inside pocket of my coat. I just made a pouch but have not got any pics of it yet. I will throw one up tonight hopefully. If not sometime soon.

:44:I Have a large man purse that carries 4 or 5 pipes, 8 to 10 oz of tobacco. pipe cleaners , reamers, tampers, etc. Room for lighter fluid, a Swiss Champ XLT, an origional Leatherman PST, and a journal. It is about 12x 8x 3 with 2 outside pockets and 2 seperate zipper compartments. Could get a whole lot of other stuff in it too. When I figgure how to put pix in a post I will up load some

i used to pack my fancy pipes all careful in a leather pouch and make sure they were safe in my pack or pocket and worry about them getting scratched or broken but now i just chuck a couple corncobs in (anywhere) and just go -if i break one i always have another and i don't have to be all proper when i'm huddled in the mud or under a tarp.also ,if just going out for a quickie i pack my pipe and throw a ranger band over the whole bowl and it's good to go when i am
p.s -i always carry the pipe tool in my pants pocket almost like an edc -i have used it for so many different things you would not believe

Seems to be a running trend. I made a simple pouch out of a piece of cloth from a pair of pants that "shrunk" too much to fit me anymore. Nothing spectacular but it holds my baccy, a pipe, and some cleaners. I ALWAYS clean the pipe after every bowl to prevent it from souring. If I am on a short dayhike I put the pouch in my haversack with everything else. If I am carrying my Malice Pack it goes in the claymore pouch on the top of the bag along side my snacks and extra tea bags.

I've also been thinking of a way to carry my pipe when on a hike. Guess I'll try making a cloth pouch and see how it turns out.

I'll post a pick when it's done!

I never took pics of the pouch I made for carrying my pipe. I just made an envelope style pouch that is big enough to carry one of my pipes along with a lighter, tamper, and some pipe cleaners. I carry my tobacco next to it either in a tin or a ziploc bag, depending on the tobacco.

Crown Royal bag. It's just big enough to where you can fit a pipe or 2 and a few ounces of tobacco.
