WOW - BCUSA is Huge !?!?

Look at the "Posts" number - That is almost "One Million" .. *whew*

OK - So How does one avail themself of all that potential information?
..................
which brings me to my 2nd Observation.

I have been a Member here a little over a year - and have participated quite a bit .. But am almost daily finding new things hereabouts.

My latest "find" was the BCUSA "Archive" ( http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/archive/index.phphttp://bushcraftusa.com/forum/archive/index.php )
I don't know if it contains "Everything" .. But, it is laid out nicely, and seems pretty easy to navigate.
Now I just need to ponder out the "Google Search --> BCUSA Archive" thing*, and I will have instant access to the Collective Wisdom of a Great Group :-) ..
*(I just forget exactly how to format that)

The numbers on the portal page are a little low. A couple of forums are not visible on the front page, so it doesn't count the numbers in those forums. The accurate numbers are found at the bottom of the main Forum page, where you see all of the forums listed.

Thanks for the additional info - and pointing to the full stats - It just reinforces my assertion, that BCUSA IS HUGE!! - A Vibrant Growing Entity!

And, as the phenomenal growth continues, 'twon't be long - a matter of days I would think - till we hit the 1,000,000 Posts milestone .. w00h00!!

A little at a time without expecting to ever learn it all. I study the four vital topics; fire, shelter, water and food with the self-imposed goal of becoming proficient in providing all of these for myself, under a variety of conditions, in 5 different ways. Next in my priorities, I study how to replace what I call "consumables" (i.e. matches, tinder, water filtration/purification, cordage and etc.) with natural materials when/if necessary.

The one statistic that I check from time to time is the active member/member ratio. It was hovering around 55% and now it's 42%. Which is the best ratio I've ever encountered on any forum. I don't know what the criteria is for being considered a active member. (probably having posted in the last 6 mos or something like that). But the percentage is indicative of the level of participation and participation means shared knowledge.

This is without a doubt one of the most incredible collections of information on the web.

Now we just need a cardboard cutout of Terry to put in the corner of our room......

That seems like a sensible approach. My big thing now is wild edibles...or I should say uses of wild plants.

My wife is the family expert on that stuff but it just doesn't stick in my head.

Yesterday we went for a walk out back (we've got a few acres that I let grow wild) and, out of the blue, she asks me if I see any edibles.

I looked down and said "we can eat all this green chit there"...Feb. 1 in Indiana and there's lots of green. Anyway, do you think I could name very much of it? Nope. I couldn't even name my "favorite" which my wife tells me is henbit...I think.

I may have to resort to memorizing the stuff I can't eat and just eat everything else!

The rest of this all seems to come pretty easy to me but what good is that without enough to eat? LOL

I could have sworn that one week ago there were around 15,100 members. Now 15,600. If I am correct, that means that 500 new members joined in the last week? That is crazy!!!

Thank you Faol, Jason and the great moderators for doing such a great job at keeping this place the way it is. I know you read this all of the time but you great people deserve to be noticed and thanked on a daily basis. It must be tough with that many members.

My year subscription is almost due and you better believe I will be paying my dues again real soon. Time flies when you are having fun.

The standard for active members is 6 months, which is where it was. I didn't think that was a good indication of actual active membership, which is why I dropped it to 3 months. That was the change from 55% to 42%.

We have over 2,000 actual members a day logging in, and over 200,000 unique visitors per month (224,000 in December), which are mostly lurkers, which is ok. It would be nice if they joined the board as well, though.

If you just want to search the site use this in the google search window. "search term" "space" "site:bushcraftusa.com" This would be an example how to search for the word "fire" fire site:bushcraftusa.com

Kudos to the tech guys who run this board as well.
This is the most stable board I've been on.
Even ones with FAR fewer members and posts seen to have technical snags all the time. The amount of data that flows through these servers has to be HUGE.

We are running about 80GB per month. I am on the 4th hosting company now. The first one lasted a year and a half, but couldn't provide the tech support I needed. The hosting company we are on now is pretty good, and scalable.

Any plans for the 1,000,000 th post?
I'll put up a liter of maple syrup.

Thanks for bringing this up. I should probably should think about that, sooner rather than later. It is coming fast.

Thanks for the offer of the maple syrup.

I love this place. A year and about 1400 posts later I'm a wiser man than I was 12 months ago.

I find myself wondering about the history. How'd it get started? We have a pretty go idea of who but why?

That is an interesting story. But, I am not in the position to tell it. Jason or Faol will have to field that question.

I'd like to know as well. Jason? Faol? Chime in?

nice archive post...wish the pics were available to me, would love to see Kepis' work

Many pictures were lost a few years ago. If I remember right, it was some sort of server change.

Yeah, once the 1,000,000 mark is hit they should give away a knife or something! To me!
