I have spent a few hours a day sharpening up my Leatherman tti and rediscovered how much I love this steel.
The edge is now wicked sharp, far far sharper than the factory edge, and the first time I have gotten it this sharp, I found it pretty hard to sharpen by hand beyond hair shaving sharp so I made up something of a jig for it which I now carry full time so I can use any stone for it in future. So as long as I have a flat surface to put the stone on I can get a great edge in nearly no time flat.

It's hard to get a nice looking picture of this edge, and it's not polished with the 30,000k yet but here is an image to look at.

Anyway, the reason I am bring this up is to ask if there are any camp sized knives made very well in s30v. I have seen a few doing a search in here but not much in the way of reviews for anything that would be used for standard camp chores, ie batonning and splitting.

The little psk survival knife with black oxide coating is nice but tiny...

So has anyone experienced larger knives (non folding) ?

Here is one more, Hair whittling image...hehe YAY

Nice job! Are you going to talk about the jig later?

Only if the local retailer turns down my offer to become their leatherman sharpener. I figure a live sample will show the effect nicely, and it would help me save for my KME sharpening system.

I figure until then I have good reason to keep it a secret.

I have continued to keep polishing on the 30k the last hour or so and it's now HHT 2.

HHT-0 - shave:The hair can be shaved immediately at the holding point. This is strictly spoken not a true HHT, but it does tell us that the edge is capable of shaving. [all other attempts must be made at least half an inch from the holding point]

HHT-1 - violin : The hair doesn't cut, but it "plays violin" with the edge. This is due to the shingles catching the edge, but it's not sharp enough to penetrate. On a full hollow razor, a faint ringing sound can be heard. On all razors it can be felt with the fingertips that hold the hair.

HHT-2 - split: When it is dragged across the edge, the edge catches the hair and splits it lengthwise.

HHT-3 - catch&pop: When it is dragged across the edge a bit, the edge catches the hair and pops it. The severed part will jump away.

HHT-4 - pop: The hair is popped immediately when it touches the edge. It still jumps away.

HHT-5 - silent slicer: The hair falls silently as soon as it touches the edge.

That is just sick :26:
I think a knife that sharp might cut your eyeballs if you look at it the wrong way.

It's the standard edge measuring system used for cut throat razors. At the moment I have three working cut throats, only one of them reaches HHT-5 the other two are HHT-4. Some blades for me seem not to want to get to that last level.

If I can get the leatherman up to 3 or 4 it means I won't have to rely on my cut throats being with me on a weekend trip...It will be a nice test of how the edge holds up, shaving sharp doesn't mean I will not be using it for general cooking chores and shavings making.

Gerber Gator comes in s30v. Used it for years n love it. It's my go to med blade.

Thats pretty decent looking, well the blade is, the handle looks like crap, but for the money...
Is that heat treated well?
And how much have you stress tested it since you have had it?

TOPS offers a Trace Rinaldi design in S30V. It is called the D.A.R.T. I wrote Trace Rinaldi and discussed the use of the steel in large blades. He swore by it and said he insisted that TOPS use it for his design. He makes a lot of customs in it but the TOPS version is a bit more affordable.

Gerber used to offer a Freeman skinner or something like that, that was a 4in or so fixed blade.

That dart is absolutely huge too. And with 60rc...Mmm me liking the fact that it can work.
I have never had a tops knife but I know hard survivalists swear by them, so thats extremely encouraging.

I have a Jose Diaz frogleg in S30V that I'm a big fan of. I've had a couple knives in S30V that I was pretty disappointed with (likely due to heat treat) but Jose uses Peter's Heat Treat for all his knives and I am really impressed by this knife. I occasionally think about selling it to try out something else and then I use it and quickly change my mind.
