Found a spike by Outsoul, on Flickr

So I was waaaay excited when I found this spike today. Having never found any sheds before, I know a bit better, now, where/what to look for. I cut the base off tonight and made a pendant. Pics of that, for another time. Just thought I would share.

Sweet, I've been keeping my eyes open for awhile for some. All I've found are some goose feathers and squirrel jaws.

Good for you. Have never found any myself, but have a friend who has a who mess of them. He uses then as coat racks, but other than that doesn't do anything with them.

...hmmm just thinking that I might be able to see if I can get a few from him.

very nice i too have not had any luck running across any sheds and again i know several people who do however they are acticely looking where as i have always just been hiking and looking at the scenery not the floor so much

Good score. I havn't found a shed myself yet. Last winter I put some time in and found nothing myself. I had to laugh after I looked all day and then my mother called and said one of their dogs carried one into the yard. I got the shed, but I can't talk them out of the dog.

I have found two small ones, one while hunting mushrooms the other while just hiking. Gave the first one to a friend of mine that is an avid shed hunter. He has hundreds in his basement, several sets from the same deer. Each year they get progressively bigger but are the same shape. He won't even hunt them till after Feb 14th.

Never found any myself but have stumbles across bones. That spike is AWESOME. As far as being useful, I'd take a couple of those over a bucket of the huge 6 to 8 pointers anyday!!!

Hi, New to this forum but I can tell you in 30 yrs of shed hunting I've found a single fork horn!!! I know where to look and can find bedding areas and such but those darn sheds never seem to be where I'm looking. I found that single one while I wasn't even looking!! I was doing some scouting and it was right in the roadway I was walking in on! Not asingle one before or since!!!!that was 5 yrs ago!

Right on brother.

I love finding sheds. Just this past November I was out and found two sheds, one was OLD, it was milky white and chalky and the other was broken off at the crown, it had half a crown and blood all over it when I found it.

I usually look for them on Apri1 1st on the south facing sides of hills and in thick stands of Aspens and along fence lines.

Nice find. I usually wait until later in the month to start looking. Maybe I will just start looking now.

We have had some rather unusual weather this year, I wonder if this could be a factor? I'm getting pics of my pendant now... Please hold

Whitetail bucks shed their antlers due to a drop in testosterone that is triggered by photoperiod, the same thing that causes the doe to go into estrous.

Photoperiod is the amount of daylight in a given 24 hours.

There can be some minor effects from weather on both, but they are usually minimal.

I usually start shed hunting in Texas around late March. Any later and the tree rats (squirrels) start getting them. The more rodents in any given area, the more antlers get eaten for the minerals in them. I have found a couple that were nothing more than "nubs" after the toothy critters had enough time chewing on them.

Good Luck shed hunting this year.
