This one grows in big hardwoods all over our farm. The roots are very white. If I remember correctly my Grandmother told me the roots were great for congestion when used to make tea. Course that's been 30 years ago and I may have the wrong plant in mind.

Greetings All,

I compliment your excellent photo of a Pipsissewa (Chimaphila maculata), in the wintergreen family (not the blueberry family that contains the plant we commonly call wintergreen or tea berry). There is another species, also called Pipsissewa, in the same genus that has no 'white' line down the center of the leaf.

No food uses I know of, but in the First Nation's world, they have several medicinal uses including for kidney problems. This plant has beautiful flowers in the early summer.

Thanks for reading,

It's striped wintergreen ( Chimaphila maculata ) It's also called spotted wintergreen.

Here's a link that lists the edible and medicinal uses of your plant - striped wintergreen ( Chimaphila maculata )
