I was inspired by an older thread on BCUSA. Kerryp used a chopped up chisel head to improvise an adze and hatchet. http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39574
I had some cheap and spare wood chisels laying around so I decided to give it a go. I, however, kept the tang of the chisel intact because I felt that it made mounting the bit very easy. Just a minute spent with a SAK's awl and a quick wrap of cord made a surprisingly adequate chopper.
Due to the tang being round, the bit can swivel a bit on you. This isn't to bad of a thing because it can be transformed from an adze to a hatchet rather easily. I did my best to make the mounting hole a tad smaller than the tang as well. This makes the top of the handle split. Once split, you can wrap it with cordage to vary how tight the bit sits in the mounting hole.
Overall this easily weighs less than a pound with handle. It could probably be thrown like a hawk as well. The cutting edge is only 1 inch but you only need to carry a few ounces of metal for such a useful tool.
