I'll be the first to admit I'm a bit of a tactical gear junkie. I'm studying to become a LEO and first heard about the keltec ksg shotgun through a police website newsletter I subscribe to. My first thoughts were how well it could work as a squad long gun, etc but then I got to wondering... How would this gun work as a bush gun? It's compact, you have more 12 gauge ammo than you could ever need for a routine use of a rifle, all sorts of cool stuff. What do people think about it's applications for bushcraft or just your thoughts on it overall as a bushcrafter for use for anything (home defense, hunting, etc)? I know it's very tactical looking, none of the traditional wood stock kinda stuff we all love so much, but other than that...?

It is a Kel Tec. Enough said- it is not likely to become an issue weapon anywhere larger than podunkville, and it would be pretty useless as a bush gun.

Look at a good H&R single shot, and carry ammo in a belt pouch or pocket for the bush. if you just have to go to a repeater, get a Mossberg or Remington pump, and you will have a reliable, shotgun.

Personally......$800 MSRP is a lot of bread for what it is. For hunting I would like a bit longer barrel or at least a different sights. For defensive use in that price range I would probably opt for a Saiga or Mossberg 930spx and lots of ammo.

I like it in general because
A) its a pump.. keeping it simple
B) the barrel is 18 inches. same as most pumps
C) overall length is only like 26 or 28 inches, That's compact for a shot gun
D) Picatinny rails on the top and bottom.
E) two 6 round tubes for shells. could be cool for loading each tube for different applicatoins

The things i don't like
A) the price. 800 is pretty high and even when it hits the streets it will be closer to 700 i'm sure... it's still too pricy for me.
B) Training, i have to train for a new style of weapon, Loading, ejection, maint.. ect
C) the tube selector is manual.. ie. if you empty the left chamber you have to reach under and flip the switch over to the right. granted that's not terrible but it would be nice to be able to empty all without manually having to flip the tiny switch on the underside.
D) they went from 7 and 7+1 to 6 and 6+1. they changed it from earlier having 15 rounds to 13. not sure what happened but more is better.

overall it's a really cool shotty but for the price i can't justify it. i have a mossberg mariner that holds 8+1 and i got it for 300 with an extra pistol grip. i could buy 2 mossbergs and ammo for the price of the Kel-tec.

if i had the money to burn, sure. but i don't so nope. BTW i have a kel-tec pf9 and LOVE it. it runs flawless and i have never had a hiccup with it. Great gun. paid 250 for it used. one of the best gun purchases i have ever made.

I will with hold any "usleless" comments for now:D, but as much as I like the concept, the execution will be what's important. Even if it functions reliably, I own a bullpup rifle and like the balance, but it's not for everybody and it is different. Even if I don't like some of their designs, I give Kel-Tec kudos for putting out some interesting stuff...if their production team can ever match their design team, I don't think the prices would be as bad as they currently are for the KSG (and RFB).

I have no experience with KelTec long guns but
I do edc a P3AT. It is an excellent pistol and runs
great. I will agree with the previous statements on
the price. You could be packing a nice 870 for a lot
less.

If I had the KSG and you had the CZ hammer coach gun, and we were heading into the bush, I'd trade you! However, if we were going into an inner city crack den I would not trade for sveldtness and natural point ability but keep the KSG.

As a survivalist type weapon I say why not, he'll I'd even buy one, for bushin it I like to keep it simple and the less parts the better, a good ol reliable corn shucker or double or single barrel break action scattergun is a great comfort, I even bush out with an old sears and Roebuck bolt action shotty, right at this moment in time I'm in the middle of saving up the cabbage to put the hammer down on an H&R single shot, now thats a light very versatile little bush howitzer.

I've owned a few KT firearms and can say they create some interesting concepts, but quality isn't up to par with other gun companies. This is fact...despite what people on KTOG will say. Now KT CS does have good service, but KT recently stated that the warranty will not transfer if you go buy a used KT. The warranty is only good for the original owner...that is a huge disappointment, but from a business standpoint I can understand this change.

For what would proabably be the actual retail price I'll make a SWAG at a bit over $600.

For that I can get a used Remington 870 Police Model all ready to rock and a bunch of buckshot to go with.

Plus it is one of the most common shotguns out there as far as parts go.

That Keltec for the time being one of the most uncommon.

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 would be my choice. I've only owned one Kel-Tec firearm, I think it was a Kel Tec P11, but it's been a few years ago. I bought it at a dealer, took it out to my car and it wouldn't feed JHP ammo. Went back inside and they gave me another. Wouldn't feed JHP ammo. The the owner put some roundnose rounds in it, slammed the receiver shut and told me to shoot 100 or so rounds to "break it in". Nope, gimme me money back. I think the ramp was too steep to feed the JHP ammo. Never even considered another Kel Tec. Some guys here like that manufacturer, but not me.

It is definetly a very cool weapon. Would be a great home defender, and who knows, depending on the quality I could see it being useful to PD's the ability to switch from a mag tube of lethal to non lethal rounds with just a switch might be handy.
