Hello all. I've recently become inspired to visit Kentucky this spring and am looking for some ideas on good places to do some camping. I'd like to visit places with some streams and plenty of forest. It'd be nice to get a little off the beaten path, or at least not be near a bunch of people running generators until ten at night. Any suggestions? The forests of the eastern United States look beautiful and very different from what this California kid is used to.

It all depends on what part of the state that you're planning on going to. If you're really wanting to get off the beaten path and away from a lot of people, then I would suggest Daniel Boone National Forest. It's a pretty big place and there are lots of isolated areas if you choose the right part of the park. Mammoth Cave National Park and Land Between the Lakes are also some good choices to consider.

Thanks a lot. I'll check those out via the interwebs. Area of the state doesn't matter too much. I'll just drive to wherever I need to go.

On the Daniel Boone National Forest (London Ranger District) look up info on the Dog Slaughter Creek, Bark Camp Creek and the Moonbow Trail (part of the Sheltowee Trace) areas. The London Ranger District was my home stomping grounds. Many great memories of backpacking, camping, hunting and stocked trout fishing from that region.

Both great choices. I like Cumberland Falls or right accross the river from me is the Shawnee National Forest(technically southern IL).

Another great area in the western part of the state is Land Between the Lakes. Lots of memories made there backpacking, fishing, hunting and camping. It is maintained by the US Forest Service. My wife and I have done the North-South Trail and many of the shorter ones. Lots to do there, as well.

All of them are great places to camp as I grew up in sout Central KY. But the thing you really need to look into is if the park allows primitive camping. I know most of Daniel Boone Natrual Forest does. But the Mammoth Cave Park does not allow primitive camping... only in approved areas. And if you want to get off the beaten path you need to check with the ranger station the the parks and let them know of your plans. I agree with a previous post... not sure who said it... but Cumberland falls are and London park area are great places. If you really want to get off the path.... Natrual bridge area is very remote.....
