I got up late this morning and decided id have a walk in the woods and have some breakfast, so i packed my backpack up, grabbed my snowshoes and got going!

You can see the road where i got on the trail. I didnt go in far, perhaps a kilometer by the time i stopped. lots of ups and downs tho!

The area where i stopped to have a fire had all the necessary materials right at hand. White birch for tinder and a large dead white spruce for everything else. kindling up to 3 inch thick branches.

I used birch bark shavings and a firesteel to get it going.

Here is a closeup showing the insect damage to the white spruce. lots of these big trees are getting killed in this area, its a beetle.

Ive been lurking here for a while and been seeing discussions about snowshoes and the binding types. Here are my shoes, which i bought off a local man who builds them in his shed. They are made from a rim of spring steel covered in self vulcanizing tape and then bound with nylon twine. They are very sturdy and the bear paw design is great for manoeuvring in amongst the bush. The binding in particular might be interesting to some of you. its made from a single, thick piece of inner tube and makes putting them on and taking them off a breeze.

Getting the kettle on to boil.

Next comes the cast iron pan and the bacon

After this point i got much too involved to take more photos. I finished cooking the bacon and then fried some cubed, parboiled spuds in the bacon fat along with a small onion and some salt and pepper. Great meal in the woods on a nice saturday morning!

cheers!

The snow shoe bindings are very cool. Looks like something that a DIY guy could really appreciate. How did he fasten them to the shoes?

there are two upright posts onto which he places the inner tube binding. over that, and also onto the posts he placed a double layer of some material similar to thin kydex to act as washers. the post then has a piece of nylon twine tied through a hole in its end to fasten the washers down.

That is really beautiful . I didn't realize N.F. looked like that . ( assuming it is N.F. )
It seems for every doggone tree there is a new beetle . We are loosing all our White Ash to a newly introduced beetle .
Snowshoes are very clever . Are you close to the Vikeing settlements ?

It is Newfoundland! Its really nice here, im on the west coast presently, in the "city" of Corner Brook. The Viking settlement at l'anse aux meadows is a good 5 hour drive from here, but worth checking out.

You can spot the dead and dying white spruce all over the place. I should know the name of the beetle but cant remember it.

Nice pics, good to see someone has a little snow to play around in, we get a little then it melts.

I can get some thick bacon at the local farmers market, if ya have one you could check there. Thanks for the post, it looks like a great time.
