The whole family made it out again yesterday. My oldest boy and girlfriend surprised me for my birthday. They set up a semi-perminant winter camp yesterday in a secluded spot, and then lured me out there under false pretenses. It was a nice surprise.
The goals for yesterday's outing were to test out some new gear and have a fun meal out in the woods, around the fire.
Yesterday's trip was the first time trying out my new Rast Camping Wok that I got for Christmas.
I fried up some chicken fajitas in it. The meal turned out well, but it was hard to keep it at a good stir-fry temperature over the small fire in the lavvu. I suspect that it would have worked better in the summer, or over a bigger fire. Overall, I liked the idea of the wok. It's not something that I'll bring out every trip, but it's got its place in my camp cooking arsenal. It's light weight stainless steel, and the handle folds in for packing.
The next bit of kit was my birthday present: a Tom Brown Tracker (full size model).
I brought out only my Turley Boone's Branch for food prep, the the Tracker for everything else.
The Boone's Branch performed excellently, as always. The Tracker really surprized me -- what an amazing tool. It split wood, carved feather sticks, made scrapings for tinder, and chopped down dead standing trees up to about 4 inch diameter all with amazing ease. Yesterday was by no means a comprehensive test of the TBT, but it was an impressive performance none the less.
Various random shots.
Thanks for looking!
