I am looking for a source of leather that will work for leather trimming wool garments and canvas bag. I don't have anything suitable (all sheath leather). I would assume you want something that is thin and flexible. Also in long pieces?

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Get with TNceeder or Kevin Kinney Bro. I've seen work that they've done using leather like that

The leather I use comes from leather coats I have found at the thrift store, and I dye it to suit what I need. I know that the Hobby Lobby store here in town carries some that would work just fine, but it's quite pricey for what you are getting.

Skab are you using pig skin as well? Or what ever seems to work? Pliable, etc.

Panzer, How much do you need I am planning on going the shop here this week, where I get my leather...They have everything under the Sun.....Gator, Iguana, snake, Eal and many more....I can get you some rates....and we can work something out...

Not sure, I think most of it is cow hide. but, I'm not picky whatever works and has the look I'm after.

Like Skab, Ive used leather coats and purses from thrift stores.

A hide of deerskin isnt too pricey, but if all you need is a little bit, Id score a leather coat.

Tandy is running or was running a special last week on elk tanned cow hide, big ones too. I got over 22 sf for $109 I think it was. Damn fine leather.

You can get deer skin for around $40 a hide at various online outlets for that sort of thing.

As others have said, a lot can be 'harvested' from thrift store coats and such.

I might try the thrift stores first to get what i need. I appreciate the help!

In that case Panzer, make sure to check for purses, coats, shirts, sometimes old luggage or couches even.

I got what you need panzer. If you want to trade and can pay shipping, I have PLENTY of french calf that is perfect for what you need. Shoot me a pm if interested, I'll let it go real cheap as I have a surplus....

I mostly use whole kid skins from Tandy leather. The best deals I've found are second hand women's leather pants. I get 4 long strips from those that will go most the way around the hem of a shirt. I use two strips to hem with and divide the other 2 length wise to trim pockets, cuffs, and the neck.

I can't sew real close to a leather edge. What I do for trimming a sleeve cuff is use a 2" wide strip folded over the edge. Sew 3/8" from the end all the way around then trim. I use a good pair of shears and cut a neat line 1/8" back from the sewn line. I'll sew up a piece and post the pic if it would help.

I bought 2 bags of thin garment leather at Hobby Lobby for $4 a bag. Some were fairly big pieces.

If you have a Tandy in your area they sometimes have scrap garment and upholstery leather that they sell by the pound, That or the thrift stores to reclaim some other leather items. Just make sure the items are real leather, manmade leather doesnt breathe.

Hey bro, I can send you some pig splits, they are very thin but strong. Not very big pieces but they will do for cuffs and the like.
Lemme know,
