I know the hardwoodsman's rule of prepping 3 times what you need, just in case...And I usually do it...Yet, today, as I got off work early :59: and decided to mess around with my own horse....I was walking to her pasture and noted some nice, dry fluffy grass and figured that I'd just kick around and light a small fire, get it going, then put it out. Just for the fun of it. So, there wasn't a whole lot of the grass there, just enough for one tinder bundle. :13:
I plucked it up, stuck it in my vest and kept walking.
Worked with the horse a bit, then settled down in a dry spot of her pasture(two wooded acres, roughly), pulled out my tinder bundle and sat it on a log beside me, made the structure for the fire(I usually do this, then place the flaming tinder bundle under/inside it; personally it seems to work best for me), pulled out my knife(Brandy-new BHK Bushcrafter, FTW! :4::4::4: ...sorry) and rod, reached over for the tinder bundle...Pat-pat-patted the log to find it...Couldn't find it....Looked over and my horse looks up like, "Hmm?" Happily chewing on that del-ic-ious ball of grass....Mmmhm. Yep. Then of course she had even more fun when I let her nose apart the structure I built.
So, to add to the reasons to prep 3 times what you need for a fire? : In case your horse eats the tinder. And, yes I know this can be avoided by keeping the tinder in pocket til lighting, keeping horse AWAY from tinder, etc etc. No flaming :58:
(Also, realized this may fall under the, "fire" category, but after copying and pasting, can't find where to delete message...?)
